East Mills 2-2 at Bedford Tourney
The East Mills volleyball team capped its last weekend tournament of the season with a second-place finish at the Bedford Invitational Tournament Saturday.
The Wolverines (19-10 overall, 3-2 in the conference) were second in pool and went 2-2 for the day. In pool play, they downed Lamoni 21-18, 21-7 and Mid Buchanan 21-12, 21-12 before falling to Council Bluffs St. Albert 22-20, 16-21, 12-15
In tournament play, Stanton got by the Wolverines 18-25, 19-25
“I am very proud of the girls for their positivity, hustle, and teamwork,” said East Mills coach Connie Viner. “It was great to play new teams. We served well, serving, 95 percent for the day and played tough in our two losses to St Albert and Stanton. We just need to minimize our errors to get the job done.”
Ryleigh Brodigan led East Mills 22 kills. Loycee Palmer had 20 and Evelyn Stoakes 19.
Mia Goodman 39 paced the offense with 39 set assists. Venna Sayers dished up 27.
Palmer led the defense with 44 digs while serving a perfect 34-of-34.
Knights battle past
Wolverines in five
East Mills split a Corner Conference triangular at Fremont-Mills in Tabor last Tuesday.
The Wolverines swept Hamburg 25-6, 25-8 and dropped marathon, 22-25, 24-26, 25-10, 25-17, 10-15 match to Corner Conference rival Fremont-Mills.
East Mills hit a blistering .524 in the win over Hamburg. Evelyn Stoakes led the way with nine kills and Ryleigh Brodigan had seven kills. Mia Goodman paced the offense with 14 set assists.
Against Fremont-Mills (8-8 overall, 3-2 in the conference), the Wolverines dug themselves a 2-0 hole before battling back to win games three and four. But the Knights squeaked out the win with a 15-10 final set.
“The girls battled every play and took control in the third and fourth set,” said East Mills coach Connie Viner. “The last set we struggled early with serve receive and with some miscommunications on the floor. Overall it was an intense and exciting match.”
The Wolverines hit .189 as team and knocked down 45 kills in the loss but the Knights were just as good, finishing with a .208 hitting efficiency with a season-high 51 kills.
Carlie Chambers led the Knights with 19 kills. Lindze Smith added 14 kills and Ellie Switzer seven.
East Mills was paced by Stoakes’ 16 kills. Brodigan added 12 kills and Loycee Palmer 11. Mia Goodman dished up 23 set assists in the loss.
The Knights dominated in every phase in its 25-7, 25-7, 25-4 sweep of Hamburg. They hit .317 as a team with 25 kills. Chambers led the way with 10 kills.
For the night, Chambers knocked down 29 kills. Bella Gute dug up 42 balls on defense and Lana Alley had 33 set assists to lead the offense.
