Beem wins title, Rams sixth at CB Classic

The Glenwood wrestling team had a historic showing at the Council Bluffs Wrestling Classic at the Mid-America Center Friday and Saturday in Council Bluffs.

Competing against 46 teams from Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, Minnesota and South Dakota, the Rams placed sixth in the team standings. The finish was the school’s highest ever at the event and tops among southwest Iowa programs competing in the event.

Glenwood’s Matt Beem also became the first Ram to win a title at the tournament with a championship at 132 pounds Saturday afternoon.

“We had five in the top five, that’s the most we’ve had since I’ve been here,” said Glenwood boys coach Tucker Weber. “I always tell the kids if you place here, you’re on the medal stand, there’s a good chance you can medal at the Iowa state tournament. Top to bottom, this is probably a tougher tournament than state.”

Beem, currently ranked No. 3 in the state of Iowa at 132, went a perfect 4-0 on the day. He notched a 20-4, technical fall victory over Easton Broxterman of Topeka (Kan.) Washburn High School in the finals.

“He (Broxterman) was a returning state champion,” Weber said. “This was a good win for Matt.”

Also reaching the medal stand were Vinny Mayberry (fifth at 120-pounds), Kellan Scott (fifth at 165), Mason Koehler (sixth at 215) and Trent Patton (fourth at 285).

“We’ve got solid kids, and they all work hard, and they know we have a good team,” Weber said. “I think is a solid start to the season to see where we’re at.”

The Glenwood girls placed 20th as a team Emily Lundvall (115-pounds) picking up fourth place medal and Audrina Johansen (120) a fifth-place finish.

Ram edged Plattsmouth in duel

The Glenwood boys wrestled team edged Plattsmouth 37-34 in an interstate battle of two ranked teams.

The Rams ranked No. 5 in Class 2A Iowa, and the Blue Devils, ranked No. 8 in Class B in Nebraska, battled in a back-and-forth duel that came down to the final match.

Plattsmouth’s Caleb Adkins won that final match at 215 pounds, in a grueling, double overtime match over the Rams’ Mason Koehler at 215. Adkins entered ranked No. 3 in Nebraska while Koehler is ranked fifth.

But the Rams, leading by six entering the match, only needed to avoid a pin in the to secure the win. Which Koehler did.

“This was a fun duel,” said Glenwood coach Tucker Weber. “They were two highly ranked kids going at it. He ended up beating us in double-overtime, but we avenged some losses from earlier in year against kids we lost to. This duel was an electric atmosphere.”

The Rams’ Vinny Mayberry (120 pounds), Matt Beem (132), Briten Maxwell (138) and Kellan Scott (165) all notched wins.
The Glenwood girls notched a pair of duel wins, knocking off Omaha Buena Vista 66-24 and the Plattsmouth girls, 48-9.

The Rams’ Emarie Nelson (235 pounds), Loralye Yenzer (105), Emily Lundvall (115), Audrina Johansen (120/125), Emersyn Howard (130), Maya Rivas (135), and Kasadie Rohmeyer-Pratt (170) all won two matches on the night.

Rams sweep at Harlan quad

The Glenwood boys wrestling team picked up a trio of dual victories last Tuesday in a road quadrangular in Harlan last Tuesday.

The Rams downed Council Bluffs St. Albert 78-5, Southwest Iowa 72-5 and the host Cyclones 63-18.

Glenwood’s Brody Black (106 pounds), Vinny Mayberry (120), Matt Beem (132), Briten Maxwell (138), Austin Wear (157), Kellan Scott (165), Ian Connell (175), Drake Buthe (190) and Mason Koehler (215/285) all notched 3-0 evenings in Harlan.
