Sieck Begins Duties As State Legislator
David Sieck of Glenwood, the newest member of the Iowa House of Representatives, was administered his oath of office Tuesday morning at the state capitol in Des Moines.
The longtime Mills County resident and former president of the Iowa Corn Growers Association easily defeated Democrat Steve Adams of Red Oak, 1082-404, in a special election Tuesday, Feb. 10. for the District 23 House seat that opened when Mark Costello was elected to fill the state Senate seat vacated by Joni Ernst, who was elected to the U.S. Senate in November.
District 23 is comprised of Mills and Fremont counties and a portion of Montgomery County. In Mills County, Sieck topped Adams, 614-110.
“I was humbled by the election,” Sieck said. “I knew Steve would be strong in his home county and I worked really hard there. I knew I should be strong here (Mills County), but I wasn’t sure about Fremont County.
“I did have a conversation with him (Adams) after the election. We had a nice talk. It was great.”
With the legislature already in the sixth week of the 2015 session, Sieck admits he has some catching up to do. The day after being elected, he sat in on he Week 5 orientation session for freshman members of the legislature.
“I have to learn how the legislative services office works and a few other things,” he said. “I do have some people, who I believe are lobbyists, that want to be friends on Facebook. They’re already wanting to work with me, I assume it’s somebody that wants to influence me some how.”
Sieck has been given four committee assignments - Education, Environmental Protection, Human Resources and Public Safety. He’ll also serve as the vice-chair of the Administration and Regulatory subcommittee.
