Ruth Virginia King Fisher, 95
Ruth Virginia King Fisher, age 95, of Glenwood, died Jan. 5, 2009, at Glen Haven Nursing Home. A Celebration of Life will be held Feb. 28, 2009, at 2:30 p.m. at the Pacific Junction United Methodist Church with interment at Martin’s Chapel, Pacific Junction.
Ruth Virginia Farnsworth was born on Feb. 27, 1913, in Union County, to Lester and Pearl Lecocq Farnsworth, the oldest of eight children. She graduated from Creston High School in 1931. She met Kenneth Carlyle (K.C.) King and they married on Dec. 3, 1933, in Papillion, Neb. To this union four children were born, Richard Carlyle, Janice Charlene, Gary Edwin and Larry LeRoy King.
In 1957 they moved to Pacific Junction, bought the Railroad Hotel and opened up a food stand on the grounds. Since cooking was one of her greatest passions, she decided to build a café so that she could offer more services for the railroaders staying at the hotel and for the community. The restaurant became known as King’s Café. The café was well known for their great noon menus and homemade pies. Mrs. King was running out of space in the dining room and decided she wanted more of a challenge, so her husband and sons built a much bigger restaurant, which became known as Kings Knight Club. Kings Knight Club offered entertainment from Kansas City as well as a full steak house menu and bar, therefore putting Pacific Junction on the map. She retired from the business in 1973 when her daughter took over the restaurant and later sold the Hotel and Knight Club.
After retiring, she then did day care for her great-granddaughters part-time and for other families for several years. She also prided herself on her flowers and vegetable gardens she raised every year. She moved to Silver City for a few years and decided she still wasn’t ready to retire completely and went to work at the Glenwood Resource Center as a foster grandparent. She then moved to her home in Glenwood where she continued to mow her own yard and raise a garden until after the age of 90. She had a very kind heart and a very deep love for all of her family. In October of 2008 she moved to Glen Haven Nursing Home to regain strength from a recent illness. She knew her job here on earth was done and went to sleep peacefully.
Mrs. Fisher was preceded in death by her parents; husband Kenneth King in 1971; husband Abe Fisher; brothers, Earl, Raymond and Robert Farnsworth; and sisters, Marie Storm, Maxine Henry, Vera Emerson and Shirley Murphy; her son Richard in 2005; and daughter Janice in 1988.
