Red Oak snaps Rams’ 5-game winning streak

RED OAK - The Glenwood girls basketball team saw its five-game winning streak snapped as Red Oak battled to a 61-41 victory over the Rams last Tuesday, Jan. 15, on the Tigers’ home court.

The Tigers began with an 8-0 run and held Glenwood scoreless for three minutes before Brooklyn Taylor made a jump shot to get the Rams on the board.

The Tigers continued to drain their shots as they stretched their lead to 17-6 at the end of the first quarter.

Glenwood came back in the second quarter to outscore Red Oak 13-10 with the help of back-to-back three-pointers, one each from Madison Camden and Joslyn Lewis.

“It was a very physical first half,” Red Oak coach Maddie Gelber said. “We were not ready for their physicality that first time we played them. We addressed that aspect after last game and we were definitely more prepared tonight.”

Red Oak used an 8-0 run midway through the third period to extend the lead to 40-28 heading into the final eight minutes of conference play and added another 20 points to put the game away.

“I think Red Oak was more physical than we were tonight,” Glenwood coach Brian Rasmussen said. “We brought a toughness, but they got most of the 50-50s, and sure as heck kicked our butts on the boards tonight. They crashed the boards well.”

Red Oak outrebounded the Rams, 41-21.

Camden led the Glenwood offensive attack with 13 points, while Elle Scarborough chipped in 10. Camden also had three steals in the game, while Brynlee Arnold pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.

Red Oak’s Chloe Johnson led all scorers with 20 points and teammate Sophie Walker added 17 for the Tigers.

Red Oak improved to 11-4 on the season with the win, while Glenwood slipped to 9-4.

The Rams’ game at Shenandoah last Friday was postponed due to inclement weather. Glenwood hosted Clarinda last night (Tuesday) and will welcome Lewis Central to town Friday night before traveling to Harlan on Saturday for a make-up game.
