Rams win Dan Hill Invitational

Matt Malcom, Anthony Sherry and Zach Haggstrom all won their weight classes as Glenwood bested the field for the team title at the Dan Hill Invitational Wrestling Tournament Saturday in Harlan.

The Rams finished with 204 points to edge second place Gretna by five points. Ashland-Greenwood (Neb.) was third with 183.

Glenwood coach Brad Asche said the competition at the tournament was top notch with both Gretna and Ashland-Greenwood being top contenders in their classes in Nebraska.

“Those two teams make noise every year in the Nebraska State Tournament,” he said. “And they have some real quality guys. They’re stacked too. They come out and want to beat you up. We matched up with both of those teams a lot in the latter rounds and ended up coming out on top.”

Ashland-Greenwood led with four weight class champions but in addition to titles from Malcom (152 pounds), Sherry (170) and Haggstrom (195) the Rams had two other wrestlers reach the finals in Isaac Bales (170) and Jon Stavas (182). In all, Glenwood got top three finishes from Trevor Anderson (third at 113 pounds), Andrew Tilley (third at 145), Isaac Bales (second at 170), Jon Stavas (second at 182) and Dillon Wiser (third at 285).

“We had five in the finals and three champions. That’s what everybody looks at,” Asche said. “Half our team placed in the top three so that’s good to see. It was our bonus points and getting falls that separated us from those other teams. I think most of our falls came in the later rounds so we were wearing people out. We did a good job finishing guys off in the third period.”

The Rams are back in action Thursday at Shenandoah before heading to the 32-team, Council Bluffs Wrestling Classic on Friday and Saturday at the Mid America Center.
