Rams show no rust in 84-62 rout of Kuemper

The Glenwood boys basketball team picked up right where it left off.

Playing its first game in 14 days following the holiday break, the Rams scored a season-high – with 59 of those points coming from Christian Stanislav and Ryan Blum – to win their fourth straight game in an 84-62 victory over Kuemper Catholic in Hawkeye 10 Conference basketball Friday.

“We shot the ball well, we got ball reversals and some inside touches,” said Glenwood coach Curt Schulte after the game. “Offensively I felt really good about what we did.”

The Rams (7-2 overall, 3-1 in the conference) took an 11-point lead into halftime before exploding for 51 points in the second half.

Zach Carr’s three-pointer with 5:03 to go put Glenwood ahead 74-44.

For the game, Glenwood shot 49 percent (33-of-67) from the field and hit a season-high 10 three-pointers in the win.

Schulte attributed his team’s second half success to a commitment to being up-tempo in attacking the Knights’ 1-2-2 press.

“We got some easy baskets, that helped,” Schulte said. “The thing we emphasized at halftime was jumping on them the first couple minutes and getting a great start. And we certainly did that.”

Stanislav scored a game-high 30 to lead Glenwood. The senior hit 13-of-22 shots and pulled down 13 rebounds. Blum shot 11-of-18, including 6-of-10 from behind the arc, to score 29.

“Both Christian and Ryan did a fantastic job,” Schulte said. “They both shot the ball really well, not just inside but from the perimeter too. It was a great offensive night for both those guys.”

All in all, Schulte said the win was a nice way to open the second half of the season as the Rams prepare for a grueling January schedule that includes home games with Atlantic and Omaha Skutt Catholic and road games at Harlan and Omaha Roncalli, kicking off this Friday with a game at the Mid-America Center against Council Bluffs St. Albert.

“I’d like to see us a little better on the defensive end, we gave up some layups in the halfcourt and we were out of position at times,” Schulte said. "I’d like to see our conditioning improve. But I was pretty happy to start 2019 with a good conference win.”
Blake Baumhover led Kuemper with 24 points.
