Rams' Schraft wins gold at Drake Relays

Janette Schraft won her first ever Drake Relays gold medal and placed in the top seven in three other events on a frigid weekend at the 110th running of the meet dubbed “America’s Athletic Classic’’ in Des Moines.

Schraft, part of the Rams’ school record 12 event qualifiers, won the 400-meter hurdles on the same track she won gold in the same event at last year’s state meet. Her Drake Relay gold is the first for the senior who has won nearly a dozen state track gold medals. Her 1:03.21 time breaks the school record of 1:03.22 set by Molly Dean in 2016.

Schraft is the Rams’ first girls Drake Relays champiom.

“She’s having a great year obviously,” Faust said. “Her team leadership has been as impressive as her performance. She’s very team oriented and has bought into the team process, which I’m guessing has been a bit of a challenge coming from a much smaller team and school. Her work capacity, discipline, and dedication to giving her all has had a really positive effect on the team. I think her impact will be felt well beyond this year with the example she has set.”

Schraft was the Rams’ only medal winner at Drake but the girls got seven other top 25 finishes at the meet pitting the top competition in the state regardless of class.

Coryl Matheny was 10th in the high jump and joined Audrey Arnold, Bailey Ostrander and Jaeda Wilson on the 4x100-meter and 4x200-meter relays that placed 25th and 22nd, respectively.

Matheny, along with Ostrander, Wilson and Abby Hughes also picked up a 22nd place finish in the sprint medley.
Elle Scarborough was a double qualifier and placed 23rd in the discus and 24th in the 100-meter hurdles. Sydney Biermann added a 11th place finish in the shot.

“I’m proud of the way they competed, and I’m looking forward to the last three weeks of the season,” Faust said.

The Glenwood boys had just one Drake event qualifer in its 4x100-meter relay. The quartet of Jon Lee, Christian Stanislav, Cooper Silvius and Zach Vondra ran a 45.27 to place 60th.

“We did not improve our time, but our time has been consistent with what we’ve been running,” said Glenwood boys coach Mark Starner. “The weather wasn’t the greatest, but it was that way for others too. We feel like we can shave some time off with tweaking some exchanges.  But overall, I thought we ran well.”

The F-M girls won the team title with 136 points. Sidney won top honors on the boys side with 165 points.

Rachel Mullennax ran a 12:28.45 to win the 3,000-meters. The Rams 4x200-meter relay also won gold.

“There were some really impressive efforts tonight,” said Glenwood girls coach Cory Faust. “Rachel Mullennax has really been on a streak this past week, and she continued that with a win and a runner up finish. The success all of our girls had shows the very good depth on our team.”

The Rams top finish came from it’s 4x800-meter relay team that placed second. They added a  handful of third place showings from Grant Von Essen (400-meter hurdles), Carter Plambeck (discus and shot), Grant Thomas (long jump) and it’s 4x400-meter relay.

Glenwood girls win own co-ed relays

In it’s final “home” track meet of the season, the Glenwood girls won the Co-Ed Ram Relays last Monday at Council Bluffs Lewis Central.

The girls racked up 157 points win them meet on the track that has served as the Rams’ home-away-from-home this season while Ram Memorial Field undergoes a renovation. Atlantic was a distant second with 113 points. Glenwood’s boys squad was the runner up to team champion Sergeant Bluff-Luton, 142 to 109.

Glenwood’s girls handily won the meet by a large margin despite competing without three of their top runners – Janette Schraft, Sadey Allgood and Elle Scarborough – and with several others getting limited work.

“I think this shows the really strong depth we have on the team,” said Glenwood girls coach Cory Faust.  “That being said, we’ll need everyone at full strength to finish the season like we want to.

The Rams won five events, including a pair of individual gold medals by Abby McIntyre (800-meters), Audrey Arnold (100) and Coryl Matheny (high jump). The Rams ‘ shuttle hurdle and sprint medley relays also snagged golds.

Faust said with his team’s juggled lineup, multiple girls stepped up to provide points.

Freshman Kennedy Jones stepped up last minute to fill in on the shuttle hurdle relay and helped the team win that event, Faust said. Erin Schultz (third place) and Rachel Mullennax (sixth) also both ran personal-record the 3000-meters while Emma Hughes had another strong night as she continues to get back into racing form with a fourth place finish in the 1,500-meters.

In all, nine senior girls athletes celebrated senior night on Monday.

Cera Gray was one of those seniors. She scored a single point for her eighth place finish in the 100-meter dash after missing much of the season with an injury. But the point was significant; it was her first varsity point of her career.

“I was really happy to see someone who has been so dedicated and team oriented be rewarded for their efforts,” Faust said. “I think Cera is symbolic of the group of seniors we have.  Not only are they really talented athletes and good students, but they are really good people and teammates. I am really grateful for all they have done for me and our program.”

The 4x200-meter relay team of Jack Hughes, Silas Bales, Christian Stanislav and Zach Vondra was the lone gold medals for the Glenwood boys but they double-placed in seven events to help their team score.

The Rams’ 4x100-meter relay team of Jon Lee, Stanislav, Cooper Silvius and Vondra placed second.

Vondra added a pair of individual medals after placing second in the long jump and third in the 200-meters.

Also picking up third place medals was Stanislav (200-meters) and the Rams’ shuttle hurdle and 4x800-meter relays.

“We’re progressing with each meet and scoring points,” said Glenwood boys coach Mark Starner. “Double placing is big in meets like this and can make a big difference. Times are starting to drop and should continue to drop from here on out as we approach our championship season type meets. We’ll use the next couple of meets to mix up our line up and find our final line up for (Hawkeye 10) conference and state qualifying meets.”
