Rams down Harlan, head to substate semis

The Glenwood girls soccer team scored three goals in the opening 11 minutes of the second half in a 5-0 victory over Harlan in Class 2A, Region 2 soccer Friday.

The first half ended in a scoreless tie before a few halftime adjustments helped Glenwood pull away in the second half.

“We had a lot of shots in the first half but were having a hard time not shooting in right at the goalie,” said Glenwood coach Amy Benson.  “We talked about hitting low and hard shots during halftime to try and beat her height since she was tall.”

Nikky Schuppan got the Rams on the board first, scoring off a pass from Alicia Leu in the 44th minute. Mia McCorkle and Katelyn Malcom added goals in Glenwood’s three goal out-burst.

McCorkle and Leu added insurance goals at the 76th and 79th minute, respectively.

For the game, Glenwood out-shot the Cyclones 29-2 on goal.

goal by Mia McCorkle in the second overtime lifted Glenwood to a 3-2 victory over Tri-Center in non-conference girls soccer last Tuesday.

The Rams (7-9) opened the game with two quick goals by Katelyn Malcom in the eighth minute and Emily Ausdemore in the 17th minute.

The Tigers cut the Rams lead in half in the 37th minute on Alyssa Baatz.

Tri-Center knotted the score at 2-2 later in the half on Megan Marsh’s goal in the 52nd minute.

The score would remain that way through regular and one overtime. Glenwood final broke the deadlock when Elisa Mulkerrin dished off a pass to McCorkle for the game-winner.

“Going into overtime both teams once again had opportunities to score and Rileigh Spahn was able to come up with some huge saves,” said Glenwood coach Amy Benson. “It was definitely a team effort today.  We had three different players score.  We also some other players step up to fill in at some positions.  The girls worked hard and this is great momentum to take with us into regionals.”

Rileigh Spahn stopped nine of 11 shots and set a new season record with 144 saves in goal.
