Rams come up big at free throw line

OMAHA - Glenwood coach Brian Rasmussen makes no bones about it: his team won this one at the free throw line.

“The way we shoot free throws was the difference,” the coach said. “Not only down the stretch, but for the game. It’s something we focus on and it certainly paid off.”

The Rams were a perfect 16-for-16 at the free throw line in the fourth quarter – and 19-of-21 for the game – to pull away for a 70-58 victory over Nebraska Class C1 No. 4 ranked North Bend Central at the 30th Annual Nebraska Prep Classic at Sokol Arena on the campus of Creighton University Saturday night.

The Class 4A, No. 1 ranked Rams knew they were in a tussle from the opening tip. With similar playing styles that feature pressure defense and up- tempo offense, the first two quarters were a rugged, back-and-forth slugfest.

Glenwood led 30-24 at the half.

“This was a game of two unfamiliar teams who have similar styles and they don’t know a lot about us and we don’t know a lot about them,” Rasmussen ad- mitted. “I think both teams played pretty hard and physical and that led to some sloppy play the first half.”

The Rams would settle down in the second half. They out-scored North Bend 17-10 in the third quarter and led by double-figures the rest of the way.

Rasmussen said his team struggled all night stopping the Tigers’ dribble penetration.

“They had too easy of a time getting into the paint in my opin- ion,” he said. “That’s something we have to continue to work on and get better at.”

In the fourth quarter, Glenwood slowed it down and forced North Bend to foul and the Rams made them pay at the line.

Camden hit all nine of her free throws and scored a game-high 21 points. Abby Hughes and Coryl Matheny each chipped in 12 points apiece.

“Madison had a nice game,” he said. “I know a lot of her points came at the free throw line but shooting 16- for-16 at the line in the fourth quarter is going to be tough to beat. I thought we did a good job of our delay game down the stretch and

capitalizing at the free throw line.”
