Rams cap regular-season with 42-20 win

Glenwood put an exclamation point on the regular season Friday night at Ram Memorial Field with a 42-20 victory over Adel-DeSoto-Minburn (ADM). The lopsided victory, which was not as close as the final score might indicate, sends the 8-1 Rams into the Class 3A state playoffs as the Class 3A, District 7 runner-up.

There was little drama in Friday night’s regular season finale as the Rams scored on their first three offensive possessions to take control against outmanned ADM, a team that finished winless in district play.

Quarterback Andrew Blum capped a 49-yard scoring drive with a 9-yard touchdown run to put the Rams on the scoreboard just three minutes into the game.

The Huskies answered the Glenwood score on the ensuing series with their only touchdown of the first half – a 61-yard pass completion from Matt West to Gavin Osteen.

With the score tied 7-7 midway through the first quarter, Glenwood reclaimed the lead for good on a 4-yard touchdown blast by Noah Carter, his first of four TDs on the night.

After stopping ADM on fourth down at the Glenwood 26 yard line, the Rams put together their third touchdown drive of the first quarter. Carter scored from 10 yards out to put Glenwood up 21-7.

Glenwood appeared to be on the verge of scoring its fourth touchdown midway through the second quarter, but a strong stand by the ADM defense ended the threat at the Huskies’ 8 yard line.

Aided by strong defensive play, the Rams would reach the end zone two more times before halftime on short TD runs by Carter.

A 5-yard TD run by Blum and a successful two-point conversion run by Cooper Silvius put the Rams up 42-7 in the third quarter.

With the 35-point “mercy rule” in play, the clock ran continuously until midway through the fourth quarter when ADM scored on a 23-yard pass from West to Osteen. The Huskie touchdown was set up by a 76-yard interception return by Cole Knoll.

Knoll would score the final points of the night in the game’s final minute of play on a 17-yard pass from West.

Glenwood finished the night with 491 yards of offense, including 392 on the ground. Josh Ruth led all ball carriers with 95 yards on seven carries. Carter netted 90 yards on 11 attempts. Glenwood also had 19 pass attempts that garnered nine completions and 99 yards. Cody Buresh and Nate Kennedy hauled in four and three receptions respectively.

“We felt by what we saw on film that we could exploit the passing game a bit,” Glenwood coach Cory Faust said. “The passing game was something we wanted work on tonight.”

Defensively, the Rams held ADM to 119 yards rushing and 116 in the air. Faust said he was pleased with the play of his defense.

“ADM is tough because they’re different than any team we play,” Faust said. “They have some good skill people and they live on that spread (formation) stuff.”

Glenwood will play at Sergeant Bluff- Luton Friday night in the first round of the state playoffs. The Warriors are undefeated at 9-0 and District 1 champions. The winner of the Glenwood-Sergeant Bluff – Luton game will face the Bishop Heelan – Harlan winner in the second round of the playoffs.
