Rams build lead early, hang on late in win over Creston

The Glenwood girls opened the game on a 13-2 run and clung to its lead the rest of the way to grind out a 45-35 win at Creston last night in Hawkeye 10 Conference girls basketball.

The Rams (6-12 overall, 4-5 in the conference) overcame some second quarter shooting struggles in the wire-to-wire win despite the Panthers cutting the lead to four points on two occasions.

“We started off strong and climbed to that early lead,” said Glenwood coach Katy Bowen. “That helped us when there was a stretch that we went cold. We kept our composure during that stretch and at the end of the game.”

Bowen said Elle Scarborough made her presence known on the defensive end for Glenwood, shutting down Panthers’ leading scorer Brielle Baker. Baker, who entered averaging nearly 20 points per game, was limited to just six.

Scarborough was equally impressive on the offensive end, scoring a game-high 19 points.

“Elle has been getting more attention from other teams and she has done a nice job of handling that and finding openings and not forcing things,” Bowen said. “We continue to share the ball well and get contributions from everyone.”

Brielle Smith added 12 points for Glenwood. Brooklyn Taylor and Joslyn Lewis added seven points each.

Kelsey Fields led Creston with 16 points.
