Rams 0-2 at Ames Tournament
Glenwood could never get on track in a pair of losses at the Ames Softball Tournament on Saturday.
The Rams (18-9) fell 10-9 to Gilbert in the opener then were shut out by the host Little Cyclones, 7-0 in the capper.
“I thought when we started (the tournament) we looked pretty good and we quickly realized we can’t just give up extra outs, can’t have the errors and teams you can put away, you have to do it,” said Glenwood coach Kylie Stanton. “You can’t just let them hang around, because when you do they have opportunity to beat you then that’s what they do. That’s what happened with us against Gilbert.”
Glenwood took a 5-0 lead into the third against Gilbert before things fell apart there. Three Ram errors in the inning opened the door to six runs.
“That third inning was big for them,” said Stanton. “It was the motivation they needed.”
The Rams managed to wrestle the lead back with two runs of their own in the top of the fourth only to see Gilbert take the lead again with two runs of their own in the bottom of the frame.
Bailey Rumery took the game one loss, allowing five hits and five earned runs in 2 2/3 innings.
Glenwood recorded 13 hits in the loss but none went for extra bases. Sara Ingoldsby had three hits and Erin Stanley, Cameron Rounds and Maddie Liddell two each.
In game two, Ames jumped out to a 2-0 after an inning en route to the 7-0 win.
“I told the girls after the first inning, two runs isn’t a big deal,” Stanton said. “We can get two runs back. That’s typically their thought process. And in the second, they (Ames) came out, chipped a few up the middle and we had a few errors to go with it and I called a timeout.
“We looked defeated. Which was crazy because I’ve seen us put up 15 runs in one inning. There was no reason for us to be down and out. And I think that changed our mentality on defense and we shut them down from there.”
The Little Cyclones only had three batters reach base over the final four innings.
Morgan Richter had the Rams’ lone hit off Ames hurler Macee Buss. The junior struck out five and a did allow a walk.
Sydney Biermann took the game two loss.
