Ram softball opens season 3-0

Sydney Biermann and Brielle Smith each smacked home runs for Glenwood in a Hawkeye 10 Conference softball sweep of Council Bluffs St. Albert Thursday.

Biermann tossed a 1-hitter in the Rams’ 10-0, five inning game one win. The junior struck out 10 and helper her cause at the plate with a grand slam and five total runs driven in for the game.

In game two, Taryn Bertini recorded the win in the circle in the 13-1 victory that was stopped after three innings.
Smith belted a two-run home run and Brooklyn Hanshaw stole four bases in the game two win.

Glenwood coach Kylie Stanton said Biermann’s grand slam in game one was huge momentum-wise and Smith’s two-run blast was big in game in game two but the juniors, who combined to hit 19 homers a year ago, are hardly the only power hitters in her lineup.

“We have tons of power up and down our lineup,” Stanton said. “You get past Brielle and Syd and you still have Brooklyn Taylor and Taryn Bertini can both take one long and they are one and two in our lineup. Erin Stanley and Cameron Rounds and Maddie Liddell  can all go for the long ball. It’s just a matter of time before everybody gets theirs.”

The Rams cap week one of the season with a 3-0 record having outscored their opponents 28-2. It’s exactly the start Stanton thought her team was capable of having.

“We thought we’d get on Creston a little quicker than we did and put up a few more runs,” Stanton said.
“But we have to put into perspective than over half our team has only hit two or three times before that game so we knew it’d take a little time to get going but it feels like we’re already figuring it out,” she said.

Glenwood 5,
Creston 1

Sydney Biermann tossed a six-hitter and drove in a run for Glenwood in a 5-1 season-opening win over Creston last Tuesday in Hawkeye 10 Conference softball.

Biermann fanned seven in the complete game win.

Cameron Rounds doubled twice for Glenwood and Brielle Smith, Taryn Bertini and Biermann all each drove in a run.
