Ram relay team breaks record at Drake

DES MOINES - The Glenwood boys 4x100-meter relay team twice broke school records and Jacy Embray became the first Glenwood thrower to medal in a decade at the Drake Relays in Des Moines last weekend.

The Rams’ 4x100-meter relay team of Dane Kruse, Jon Van Scoy, Mavrick Decker and James Fuller broke the school record time set 50 years ago and then snapped that mark again Saturday with a time of 43.23 to place third overall in a competitive field. West Burlington had the top time of 43.16 at Drake.

Glenwood coach Mark Starner wasn’t shocked his team broke the school record, but he was surprised.

“Going into the meet, we knew we had to be 43 something to have a chance to make the finals,” Starner said.  “When I saw our prelim time, I was dumbfounded and couldn’t believe it.  I knew we could go 43.8, but I never fathomed that we would run 43.23.  The boys just flat out competed and didn’t buckle under any pressure of running in a high pressured event.”

Kruse placed fifth in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.98 on Friday.

Decker placed 22nd in the 100-meter with a time of 11.60. Fuller was one spot behind in 23rd place.

The boys shuttle hurdle relay team featuring Blaine Clark, Carter Von Essen, Caleb Petersen and Kruse clocked in at 59.81 for eighth place.

“I was very pleased on the weekend,” Starner said. “It’s always an honor and privilege to compete at Drake against some of the best teams in the state.  And when you can bring home some hardware, it’s definitely a very good meet.”

Both of the Glenwood girls’ throwers acquitted themselves well against the state’s top competition on Friday. Embray placed fifth in the shot with a top throw of 41 feet, 11 1/4 inches. Her throw was the school’s second best all time at the Drake Relays to become the first medal in a throwing event for Glenwood since Katie Wilson placed third back in 2004.

The Rams’ Linnaea Konfrst placed 21st in the discus with a top heave of 115 feet, 8 inches. Her throw was Glenwood’s third best all time at the Drake Relays.

On Saturday, the Glenwood girls shuttle hurdle relay team of Miranda Ruth, Ashley Konfrst, Molly Dean and Olivia Scarborough finished eighth with a time of 1:08.39.

“The ladies competed well and ran on a cold, windy, and rainy morning,” said Glenwood coach Brad Rasmussen. “This is the first time in history for a shuttle hurdle relay team to qualify for the Drake Relays.”

The relay teams’ time was the school’s third fastest all-time.

“The challenge of qualifying for Drake and then reaching the goal is an outstanding achievement,” Rasmussen said. The ladies represented the school and their teammates well. This is the most events to qualify for the Drake Relays in school history. The coaching staff is proud of the team and we are looking for better performances the rest of this season.”

Rams sweep L.C. Invite

In its finals tune up before the Drake Relays, the Glenwood girls and boys track teams dominated the field to sweep the team titles at the Council Bluffs Lewis Central Co-Ed Track Meet last Tuesday.

The Glenwood girls racked up seven gold medals and seven other top three finishes in besting the field with 189 team points. Harlan was the runner up with a distance 157.5 points.

Jacy Embray (shot put), Linnaea Konfrst (discus) and Molly Dean (high jump) each won gold in the field events dominated by the Rams. Embray also took second in the discus and Konfrst second in the shot. Courtney Magnussen added a fourth place showing in the long jump.

The Rams also got gold medal performances from Miranda Ruth (100-meter hurdles), Dean (400-meter hurdles) and the 4x100-meter and shuttle hurdle relays.

The boys were no less dominant, winning six gold medals and double-placing in eight events in all for 152.5 team points to out-pace second place Harlan’s 127 points.

Winning individual golds for the Rams were Mavrick Decker (100-meter dash), Dane Kruse (110-meter hurdles) and James Fuller (200-meter dash).
