RAGBRAI Bicyclist Killed In Highway 34 Collision

The Iowa State Patrol and RAGBRAI officials have confirmed the death of a bicyclist involved in a collision with a pickup truck around 6:40 a.m. Sunday near mile marker 2 of U.S. Highway 34, west of the Interstate 29 Glenwood interchange.

The bicyclist, 72-year-old Wayne L. Ezell of Jacksonville, Fla., was going west when he was struck from behind by a 2012 GMC pickup truck driven by Robb W. Philippus, 34, of Glenwood, according to an Iowa State Patrol report.

The location of the accident is not on the designated RAGBRAI route, but ride officials said the man was in the area to take part in the week-long bicycle ride across the state that began Sunday morning in Glenwood.

“Our hearts and prayers go out to the family, friends and teammates of the cyclist we lost this morning,” RAGBRAI director TJ Juskiewicz said in a written statement.
