Pauley too much for Rams

Spencer Pauley poured in 25 points to lead Denison to a 61-54 Hawkeye 10 Conference victory over Glenwood Friday.

The Rams (9-11 overall, 4-7 in the conference), who trailed 33-22 at the half, rallied in the second half to cut the lead to two points in the fourth quarter but Glenwood came up short against the conference champion Monarchs.

Nate Mohr led Glenwood with 14 points. Wyatt Schulz added 11 and Jake Lewis nine.
Pauley finished 8-of-16 from the field with nine rebounds and three blocked shots.

Shenandoah 62,
Glenwood 58

Jake Cerven’s layup with 29 seconds left proved to be the game-winner as Shenandoah handed the Glenwood boys another close 62-58 Hawkeye 10 Conference loss last Tuesday.

The Rams (9-10 overall, 4-6 in the conference) have suffered four of their six conference losses by a total of eight points this season.

“We’ve been in the fire a lot this season,” said a dejected Glenwood coach Curt Schulte after the game. “They’re all tough ones to lose and we’re playing the toughest competition in the land and taking teams deep. Hopefully we’ll continue to learn from these games and it’ll pay off come district time.”

After a mostly back-and-fourth first half, Glenwood found itself down three at halftime and by seven just two minutes into the third quarter thanks to a 11-0 Shenandoah run bridging the two halves. But the Rams would respond.

Jacob Lewis’ layup capped a 9-0 run to give Glenwood a 34-32 lead with 4:07 to go in the third quarter.
The teams would trade leads the rest of the frame with Shenandoah taking a slim 43-42 lead into the fourth.

The lead would change hands five more times in the final quarter alone before Glenwood appeared to have snagged the lead and the momentum for good on Nate Mohr’s fourth three pointer of the half. The 25-footer bomb put the Rams up 58-57 with 49.8 to go.

Shenandoah, however, would respond. After running the clock down to 28 seconds, Cerven’s layup put the Fillies up 59-58.

The sixth lead change would be the last.

Glenwood missed a runner with 13 seconds left leading to a pair of free throws by Cerven and another Payden Anderson to seal the win.

“These are all winnable games,” Schulte said. “There’s nobody we can’t beat. We just have to do the little things down the stretch.  The tiny things. We have to treat every possession like it’s our last.”

Glenwood has lost three of four since winning at Shenandoah 71-65 on Jan. 23.

“We’re two pretty evenly matched teams,” Schulte said of Shenandoah. “We could probably play 10 times and split all 10. You have to give them credit, they played well and hit key shots down the stretch and they pulled it out.”

Mohr and Andrew Blum, both freshmen, led Glenwood with 12 and 14 points each respectively. Lewis added four points and 10 rebounds.

Anderson led Shenandoah with 21 points.
