Richard “Dick” Estes, 85

Richard “Dick” Estes passed away on May 15, 2025 in Reno, Nevada.  He will be buried in the Glenwood Cemetery at 11:00 am on Saturday, May 16, 2026.  A celebration of his life will follow at noon at the Bloom Senior Center, 20 N. Vine St., in Glenwood.

Richard Allen Estes was born on Aug. 24, 1939 at his family’s farm in rural Pacific Junction, Iowa, the son of Richard William Estes and Anna Belle (Bates) Estes.  He attended nearby Pacific City School and graduated from Glenwood High School (class of 1957), where he excelled as a football running back, track team member, and was involved in student council and chorus.  After graduation, he served a stint in the National Guard.

Richard attended Arizona State University, where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and earned a business degree in 1963.  After college, he lived and worked in San Francisco, Calif. in various sales jobs and as an industrial real estate broker.   In 1998, Richard changed careers and became a seaman for the U.S. Navy military sealift command and merchant marine until his retirement in 2004.  He moved in 2013 to Reno, Nev., where he spent the rest of his life.

Richard was preceded in death by his two older sisters, Mary Louise (Estes) Mitchell and Eleanor Anne (Estes) Potach, both of Omaha.  He is survived by niece and nephews Janet (Mitchell) Novak of Omaha; Steven Potach of Robbinsdale, Minn.; and James Potach of Longmont, Colo., and by 12 grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
