Clarinda tops Glenwood, 5-1

Glenwood dug itself a 4-0 hole it could never get out of in a 5-1 loss to Clarinda in Hawkeye 10 Conference baseball at A.C. Nuckolls Field in Glenwood Thursday.

The Rams (5-5 overall, 3-4 in the conference) had just one extra-base hit among their seven base knocks and could muster just one run off Clarinda starter Karsten Beckell.

Beckell was never dominant on the hill but was efficient, allowing just six singles and striking out five while walking none in 5 2/3’s innings.

“You have to give their pitchers credits,” said Glenwood coach Kurt Schultz. “They threw hard and kept us off balance and not everybody hit them well. We had a couple innings with opportunities but we didn’t come through and I credit their pitchers for that.”

Jason Colpitts and Risto Lappala had two singles each to lead Glenwood. Lappala drove in the Rams’ lone run.

James McCall led the Cardinals with two doubles and drove in two runs.

Brody Taylor took the loss for the Rams after allowing two hits and four earned runs in two innings of work.

Glenwood 5,
Sioux City West 4

Risto Lappala singled to drive in the game-winning runs in the bottom of the seventh for Glenwood in a 5-4 victory over Sioux City West last Wednesday.

“This was a good win,” said Glenwood coach Kurt Schultz. “They (Sioux City West) were a lot tougher than I think the kids thought they were going to be because they’d been struggling this year but they played hard. Our kids had to pick it up and get those two runs or it would have not been a good loss.”

Kayden Anderson had three hits and Jason Colpitts had two hits and drove in a run to lead Glenwood at the plate.

Colpitts started on the mound and allowed just one hit and one earned run while striking out four in six innings but did not factor in the decision.

“He pitched well,” Schultz said of Colpitts. “This was probably the most he’s thrown for us on varsity and he was good. He pitched well enough to earn the win.”

Nolan Allmon came on to pitch a scoreless seventh to be credited with the win.

Glenwood 9,
Red Oak 8

Kayden Anderson smacked three solo home runs and Glenwood finished with 17 hits in a 9-8 Hawkeye 10 Conference baseball victory over Red Oak last Tuesday at A.C. Nuckolls Field.

Anderson has been the Rams’ most consistent hitter all season, said Glenwood coach Kurt Schultz.

“All season long he’s hit the ball well,” he said. “He’s always up there working hard, doing his job.”

The junior Nebraska recruit currently leads the conference in hitting (.667) and home runs (6).

Nolan Clark and Evan Soergel each added three hits for Glenwood. Clark drove in two runs and Trent Patton doubled and drove in two runs.

Ryan Turner tossed 5 2/3 innings and scattered eight hits and three earned runs in the win.

“He’s been throwing consistent all year,” Schultz said. “He’s thrown one bad inning and that was against St. Albert. Otherwise, he’s throw real well.”

Brett Erickson took the loss for Red Oak after allowing eight hits and five earned runs.

C.B. Lewis Central 9,
Glenwood 4

Council Bluffs Lewis Central plated four runs in the fifth inning to pull away from Glenwood in a 9-4 victory in Hawkeye 10 Conference baseball last Monday in Council Bluffs.

The Titans notched seven hits in the win with Luke Woltman going 3-for-4 with the runs driven in.

Kayden Anderson started on the mound for the Rams. The junior allowed two hits and one earned run in four innings of work. Two Glenwood fielding miscues led to four unearned Titan runs.

“We didn’t play the best defense to help Anderson out,” said Glenwood coach Kurt Schultz. “It’s tough. They put a lot of pressure on you, they’re a good team, and their pitchers throw hard.

Their first pitcher threw hard and had some good off-speed stuff.”

The Titans Ty Thomson struck out 14 Rams and scattered three hits in six innings of work to earn the win.

Anderson smacked a solo home run and Trent Patton had three hits, including two doubles, to lead the Rams at the plate.
