Logan-Magnolia out-scored Fremont-Mills 31-20 after halftime to pull away in a 49-32 victory Friday in Tabor.
The Knights had their struggles offensively – 25.5 percent shooting from the field, 16 turnovers – in their first loss of the season.
Taylor Reed paced the Knights with 13 points and nine rebounds.
Fremont-Mills 56,
Heartland Christian 27
Jake Malcom scored 11 of his career-high 24 points in the fourth quarter as Fremont-Mills pulled away from a pesky Heartland Christian team 56-27 last Monday.
The Knights built an early 20-6 lead and appeared to be poised to pull away for good in the first half when the Eagles went on a 15-2 run to close the first half and open the second half to trim the Knights lead to 22-21.
But the Heartland Christian rally would stall there, although they would hang around into the fourth.
That’s when Malcom went to work.
The senior scored 10 straight point as part of a 15-3 run to widen the Knights’ gap. The Eagles never recovered.
Fremont-Mills coach Steve Raymond felt despite his team’s struggles to get some continuity and rhythm going on offense, especially early in the first half, the game didn’t feel in doubt.
They just need to “kick it in gear and execute.”
“We missed some easy buckets that led us to get a little timid,” he said. “We had some early opportunities to open up the game in the first half, but we got into some foul trouble. After we were able to get through the foul trouble and got moving, offensively, we really exploded. I thought Jake Malcom and Ike Lemonds were really key in getting us going.
Malcom hit 9-of-17 shots for his game and career-high night. He also grabbed nine rebounds, blocked six shots and grabbed four steals. Brady Owen chipped in nine points and Taylor reed six.
The Knights limited Heartland Christian to 18 percent shooting and forced 27 turnovers.
Raymond liked his team’s work defensively.
“I was really happy with how we executed,” Raymond said. “Any time you hold a high school basketball team to under 30 points, it’s a pretty successful night. We have told our boys that we are hanging our hat on the defensive end this year.”
