East Mills advances six to districts
TRI-CENTER - The East Mills wrestling team advanced to this Saturday’s Class 1A, District Wrestling Meet with a second place showing at sectionals in Tri-Center Saturday.
The Wolverines had six district qualifiers, second only to sectional champion Logan-Magnolia’s 11. East Mills’ Ben Christiansen (120 pounds), Alec Moorman (132), Luke Stortenbecker (145), Josh Hopkins (152), Nick Perkins (220) and Anthony Ossman (285) were among the district qualifiers.
Moorman, Hopkins, Perkins and Ossman all won their weight classes.
The top place winners in each weight class advance for a shot at next week’s state tournament.
The Wolverines had just 10 wrestlers competing at sectionals, meaning they needed every point to edge third place Underwood by 11.5 points.
“The team was really focused today and it showed in their semifinal and final matches,” said East Mills coach Claude Lang. “As coaches, it always makes you feel good when you know your wrestlers left it all on the mat today.”
With the win, East Mills also advances to the regional duals for the third straight season.
The Sidney/Southwest Iowa wrestling team also competed at the Tri-Center sectionals with Dakota Moss (138), Haydn Meier (195) and Bret Blackburn (220) all advancing to districts.

East Mills 2-1 in quad
Josh Hopkins tied the single season mark in wins with 46 and East Mills won two of three matches at the Rock Port, Mo. quadrangular last Tuesday.
The Wolverines downed host Rock Port 54-12 and Southwest Iowa 36-27. Shenandoah narrowly escaped with a dual win over East Mills 36-32.
“We wrestled tough against Shenandoah, just not tough enough to get the win,” said East Mills coach Claude Lang.
Hopkins (46-1) went 3-0 on the day with three pins to bring his season-total to a school-record 31.
Alec Moorman (132 pounds), Cavin Darnold (170) and Anthony Ossman (285) all went 3-0 at the night.
East Mills closes its regular season with a dual record of 21-11.
