Malcom first, Rams fourth at Hawkeye 10 meet

Matt Malcom won his second straight conference wrestling title and Glenwood finished fourth in the team standings at the Hawkeye 10 Conference Tournament Saturday in Glenwood.

Creston edged Council Bluffs Lewis Central 245 to 235 in the team scores to wrap up its fourth straight conference crown. The Panthers finished with three individual champs and 10 top six finishers.
The Rams finished fourth with 213 points, 10.5 behind third place Clarinda.

“We wrestled hard and did a lot of good things,” said Glenwood coach Brad Asche. “We scored a lot of points. I think we had more match points than anybody in the conference and we had more falls in the tournament but it just didn’t come together in some weights for us.”

Asche said the fact his team scored 213 points and still finished fourth is a testament to the depth of the Hawkeye 10 Conference.

“Having four teams between 213 points and 240 points is impressive. I’m amazed we scored that many points and finished fourth, to be honest. But those teams wrestled well and we have some work to do before districts.”

Malcom, the Rams’ 152-pounder, scored a 9-1 major decision over Clarinda’s Luke Strong in the finals for his second conference title. Malcom won the conference at 132 pounds last season.

“He was very offensive all day,” Asche said. “When he struggled in January a little bit he wasn’t being offensive and doing the things we worked on. I think he learned from that. Right now, he’s got great self-esteem going and he’s really wrestling well.”

The Rams’ Anthony Sherry (160 pounds) and Trevor Anderson (113) both reached the finals in their respective weight classes.
Sherry fell in his finals match to Creston’s Chase Schiltz 9-3. Schiltz is 21-0 this season.

“He won the first period and then I think conditioning came in,” Asche said of Sherry’s finals match. “Schiltz is experienced and he’s gained some confidence since they wrestled last time. But it was a real exciting match to see those two guys with good skill go at it in the finals.”

Anderson lost in the finals to Carter Cox of Atlantic, his third loss to the Trojans’ 113-pounder this season.

“He had a really good day, coming off of what he had Friday,” Asche said of Cox and Anderson, who soldiered through the tournament despite missing Friday’s practice due to sickness. “He scored a lot of points for us and getting a fall in the semifinals with one second left and then he has to face his nemesis in the finals. He’s lost some close matches to that kid before. He just did a great job for us.”

The Rams’ were without Dan Forbes, their top 285 pounder, due to sickness forcing junior varsity 220-pounder Mitch Stanley to fill in. Stanley, often giving up 60 pounds to his opponents nearly made the finals and finished fourth at the conference meet.

“He really stood out. He bumps up to heavyweight and really wrestled well. He scored points for us and that’s what we needed,” Asche said.

Glenwood has nearly a week off before traveling to the Class 3A Regional Duals at West Des Moines Valley Feb. 11. The Rams will face Fort Dodge in the opener for a shot to face the host Tigers and a spot in the State Dual Wrestling Tournament.

Rams split
at Clarinda

The Glenwood wrestling team split a road double-dual at Clarinda last Tuesday.

The Rams knocked off Bedford/Lenox 44-24 before falling to the host Cardinals, 39-34.

“We had some guys get pinned and bonus points are huge when you are evenly matched with a team,” said Glenwood coach Brad Asche. “Clarinda came out ready to wrestle they pinned us at some weights and we played catch up. They fought off of their backs and didn’t get pinned and we didn’t.”

Against Bedford/Lenox, the Rams won eight of 14 matches recorded five falls.

The Cardinals and Rams split 7-7 in their matches but Clarinda pulled out the win, thanks to bonus points in six falls.

“Bonus points are crucial in a close dual and you cant give them up if you want to win,” Asche said.

Matt Malcom (152 pounds), Anthony Sherry (160) and Andrew Tilley (145) won both of their matches in the double-dual.
