Glenwood boys cross country second at district
ATLANTIC - For the second straight season the Glenwood boys have qualified as a team and will send three individual runners to the state cross country meet this Saturday.
The Rams placed second at Thursday’s district track meet at the Nishna Hills Golf and Country Club in Atlantic. Boone took home the district championship with 30 team points. Glenwood, with 54 team points and Ballard with 76, qualify along with Boone for the state cross country meet on Saturday in Fort Dodge.
Boone’s Chandler Austin out-sprinted Glenwood’s Mark Abrams over the final 300 meters to win the district title by 13 seconds. Austin was one of three Boone runners in the top four. The top 10 runners qualify for state.
“We ran well,” said Glenwood coach Todd Peverill. “Mark got challenged there. It’s a different race when it comes to state. Mark did well running downhill and the Boone guy did very well running up hill so they went back and forth. We talked afterward about what he could do different and I said ‘Nothing, you’re going to be sitting on somebody else. You won’t have to push the pace.’ That will make a big difference at state.”
Glenwood had three runners place in the top 10, with James Fuller and Jeff Reeve both earning their first state trip placing sixth and seventh, respectively.
Other Ram runners placing were Brady Wheeler with 14th, Pascal Oosterik with 25th, Jakob Rhodes 34th and David Barrett 54th.
“James and Jeff ran great,” Peverill said. “Some of their best times of the year and I think this was a pretty long course with the hills so that was great. And Wheeler did pretty good for where he is right now after being sick last week. Pascal, he’s still recovering from being sick too and then Rhodes finally had a great race. He’d been struggling for a while and he ran well.”
Peverill thinks his team’s depth and some rest leading up to Saturday’s state meet can go far in getting the Rams’ on the winner’s balcony.
“I think we can do very well at state. We may be up there on the balcony...hopefully,” Peverill said. “They’re running well, we’re coming on. We just need to keep getting healthy. We got to state. Second place at districts? I’ll take it.”
At the girls’ regionals at Alantic, Harlan edged Dallas Center-Grimes 57 to 59 for the regional title. Both teams will head to state this week.
The Glenwood girls ran what coach Brad Rasmussen called their best race of the year while placing ninth with 238 team points.
Carly Cooper was the Rams’ top place winner, finishing 25th in 17:03. Morgan Naughton was 34th in 17:35.52 and Chelsea Webster was 53rd in 18:07.84.
“The Rams overcame many obstacles this year to run their best meet of the year.” said Glenwood girls coach Brad Rasmussen. “The Ram’s times were all better on the same course they ran two weeks earlier. The Rams look forward to next year and even more successes.”
