It took nearly two months into the winter solstice, but Mother Nature haa finally dumped some snow on southwest Iowa.

Not once, not twice, but three times in the past week.

Since the first measurable snowfall of the winter fell last Wednesday, most areas of Mills County have received between 6-8 inches of snow to go along with some freezing drizzle and plummeting temperatures.

Punxsutawney Phil, the weather-forecasting groundhog was right, winter isn’t over yet.

The midweek snowfall in southwest Iowa last week began late in the day on Tuesday with some light flurries and mist that turned into heavy snowfall overnight. By Wednesday evening, 3-4 inches of snow had fallen on portions of Mills County.

The precipitation returned overnight Friday into Saturday morning in the form of freezing drizzle and a light dusting of snow.

Temperatures were falling throughout the day on Sunday just in time for another round of snow. The flakes were flying throughout the day Monday - heavy at times - with accumulations of 3-5 more inches of snow by the end of the day.

Monday’s round of snow appears to the be the last of the measurable snowfall for now, but not the cold temperatures. Forecasts call for temperatures to dip to as low minus-15 degrees on Wednesday and Thursday before a warm front moves in.

High temperatures are expected to rise into the 40s over the weekend and into the 50s next week, likely melting away the snow that’s fallen over the past week.
