Mills County Attorney Naeda Elliott Resigns, Withdraws From Election

Mills County Attorney Naeda Elliott has submitted her resignation and withdrawn as the Republican candidate for the position in the Nov. 8 general election.

In an email message to The Opinion-Tribune Friday morning, Elliott said she has accepted a new position and is withdrawing from the election.

Katie Dodge, election assistant in the Mills County Auditor’s Office, said Elliott’s name will still appear on the general election ballot in November. There will be no other candidates for the county attorney position on the ballot.

“If she (Elliott) wins the attorney’s office, she’ll just decline,” Dodge said. “It takes effect now but she is resigning as of the end of her term, which would be Dec. 31, unless the board appoints someone sooner.”

Dodge said the Mills County Board of Supervisors will make an appointment to fill the county attorney’s position and that person would be required to run for election in 2024. However, should a write-in candidate (other than the appointee) win the general election, that person would be offered the position and they could either accept of decline, Dodge said.

Elliott has served as the Mills County Attorney since June 2016. She has also served in the dual capacity as the Fremont County Attorney but opted not to run for re-election to that post, according to a spokesperson in the Fremont County Auditor’s Office. Democrat Peter Johnson is running unopposed for that position.
