Glenwood's Family Fare Grocery Store Closing In February

The Family Fare store on Glenwood's Town Square is closing in February.

Glenwood is losing its Town Square grocery store.

The Family Fare store at 423 Sharp St. is closing in mid-February.

The pending closure was confirmed Friday in a brief written statement provided to The Opinion-Tribune from Michigan-based SpartanNash, Family Fare’s parent company.

“We have made the difficult decision to close the Glenwood Family Fare in February 2025. We are grateful to our store guests for their loyal support, as well as our dedicated associates for their commitment to our shoppers,” said SpartanNash District Manager Lance Kramer.

SpartanNash provided no additional information. Employees were notified of the pending closure last week.

SpartanNash operates nearly 200 retail grocery stores in multiple states under several names - Dan’s Supermarket, D&W Fresh Market, Family Fare, Family Fresh Market, Forest Hills Foods, Martin’s Super Markets, No Frills, SunMart, Supermercado Nuestra Familia and VG’s Grocery.

The Glenwood store operated as a No Frills from 2007 – 2024. In 2007, then independently-owned No Frills acquired the long-standing Kaiman’s Supermarket from Jerry and Harold Kaiman.

A grocery store has anchored the south side of Glenwood’s Town Square for more than a century.
In 1921, Morris Kaiman opened Omaha Fruit and Grocery. His
sons, Robert and Louis, eventually took over the business and Robert’s sons, Jerry and Harold, later assumed their father’s portion of the operation in 1967.  Jerry and Harold bought the remaining share after their uncle Louis retired in 1975.

According to the Supermarket News website, the Glenwood Family Fare is one of four stores SpartanNash will be closing in the coming weeks, along with Family Fare stores in Omaha and Chippewa Falls, Wis., and a VG Grocery Store in Caro, Mich. Twenty-three employees are losing their jobs at the Glenwood store.

News of the store’s closure began circulating on Glenwood social media sites last week after employees were given notice by store management.

Glenwood Mayor Angie Winquist said she was “saddened” to learn Family Fare was being shuttered, noting the closure will create a significant void in Glenwood’s downtown business district.

“I was really surprised to hear about it. I had no inkling that was happening,” she said. “Nobody reached out to us. I feel really bad that they’re closing. I wish we had heard about before we heard it on the street.”
Winquist said it’s too early to say what the future holds for the building and what role the city might play in trying to attract a replacement business for Family Fare. Winquist said she expects to have a conversation about the store’s closure this week with Mills County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Gitzy Loder.
