Glen Haven Village has added a new component to the menu of senior care services it provides in the Glenwood community.
Glen Haven Village Adult Day opened last week in a cottage on the campus of the former Glenwood Resource Center. The facility is a place for seniors to spend a day under supervised care in a positive and engaging environment. Glen Haven Village Administrator Julianne Marriott said the program was developed to enrich the lives and continued independence of participants while also providing an opportunity for caregivers in need of respite. The program has been on Glen Haven Village’s radar for several years, according to Marriott.
“We have been dreaming up this concept,” she said. “Ever since I’ve been at Glen Haven, we’ve been kind of keeping our thumb on finding a space and an opportunity.”
Adult Day is located at 239 Indian Hills Dr., next to the Glen Haven Village administrative office. One week in, the program has three registered participants with the capacity to grow to 24.
Adult Day Director Tracy Gregory said along with a clinical assessment, the needs and interests of each participant are evaluated at the time they’re registered for the program.
“My goal is to provide meaningful activities to keep them engaged throughout the day,” she said. “We determine each person’s interests and keep them engaged.”
Gregory said the daily schedule of activities ranges from crafts and gardening to playing board games and putting together puzzles. There’s also trivia, a wellness room and outdoor patio for physical workouts and activities.
“Both brain health and physical health,” Gregory said.
The facility has open community areas for group activities and individual areas for participants who prefer a more private space.
“We recognize that most people are coming from their homes where they don’t have 17-20 people there so they may want some time away from the large group space,” Gregory said.
Glen Haven Adult Day is a program available to adults 55 and older with various needs, including individuals with physical or mental disabilities, those who have dementia-related illness, individuals wanting to postpone long-term care or are in need of support with daily living activities, such as drug administration.
“Our message is if they have a need, give us a call,” Gregory said.
If a service is required that‘s not available at Glen Haven Village Adult Day, the program can assist with referring the person to the proper agency.
Once registered, participants can be in the program for up to one year. The program operates Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. but daily participation isn’t required. Some participants may come every day, while others might come two or three days each week. The cost is $85 per day. Lunch and a continental breakfast is included. . Optional services, such as bathing and transportation from home, are available for a nominal fee.
Although only private pay is being accepted at this time, other payment and waiver options will soon be available.
Potential participants and caregivers who would like to learn more about the program or schedule a free “visit day” at Glen Haven Village Adult Day are encouraged to contact the facility at 712-302-9016, Ext. 3907.
Individuals and organizations with an interest in making a donation to the facility or serving as a volunteer are also encouraged to reach out. Additional information about the program is available online at glenhavenvillage.com.
