Glen Haven Village is one of 38 Iowa long-term care facilities recently recognized nationally for their commitment to quality care. Glen Haven Village is among the facilities to receive a 2024 National Quality Award from the American Health Care Association and National Center for Assisted Living (AHCA/NCAL).
Award winners were recognized during AHCA/NCAL’s Quality Summit April 7 in Atlanta, Ga. Four Iowa facilities received a Silver Achievement Award and 34, including Glen Haven Village, were recognized with Bronze Commitment to Quality Awards.
“These providers are doing the hard work to raise the bar for quality in long-term care,” said Kimber Larson, quality improvement director for the Iowa Health Care Association (IHCA). “This prestigious recognition reflects their dedication to continuous improvement and their deep commitment to the Iowans they serve every day.”
The AHCA/NCAL National Quality Award Program honors long-term and post-acute care providers that demonstrate a commitment to improving the lives of residents and patients. Awards are given at three levels - Bronze, Silver and Gold - based on the Baldrige Performance Excellence Framework, which evaluates excellence in areas such as leadership, operations and resident satisfaction.
Administrator Julianne Marriott said Glen Haven Village was notified of the award late last year.
“It’s a progressive awards system,” Marriott said. “Everybody starts with bronze. You meet the criteria and complete an application. Through the application you have to show that you met certain criteria as an organization as for building a quality assessment and performance improvement process.
“Then, you have to show progress. It’s called QAPI. You have to show progress and demonstrate success in your QAPI system. Once you’ve achieved bronze, you can then apply for silver the following year. We’ll be working on that this fall.”
Marriott said Glen Haven Village staff members first discussed submitting an application for the award more than five years ago after the facility moved to its new location on the campus of the Glenwood Resource Center.
“We had planned to apply after we moved to the new building about 5 years ago, but then when COVID hit, it just wasn’t our priority at the time,” she said. “After we regrouped, we decided to start the process.”
Marriott said the award is gratifying for Glen Haven Village staff.
“It certainly is sort of an appreciated moment after the COVID pandemic and the struggles we went through,” she said. “It’s definitely a proud moment for the team.”
Glen Haven Village Director Of Nursing Dustin Archer-McClain and Staffing Coordinator Stevi Fowler traveled to Atlanta to pick up the award on Glen Haven Village’s behalf. The award ceremony was originally planned for last fall in Orlando, Fla., but was cancelled because of a hurricane.
