East Mills Names New Elementary Principal

Melissa Nielsen

East Mills has selected its new elementary school principal.

The East Mills Community School District School Board announced last week that Melissa Nielsen has accepted the offer to serve as the district’s next elementary principal.

A school district news release stated that as a TLC lead teacher and instructional coach at East Mills Elementary School, Nielsen has created professional development plans for staff, guided the implementation of the Iowa Instructional Framework and helped to create a master schedule. She also has experience reviewing and analyzing district data, interviewing candidates for teaching positions, and monitoring students’ behavior and safety.

Nielsen holds a master’s degree in educational leadership from Doane University in Nebraska.

The East Mills school board and stakeholder interview teams conducted final interviews with three finalists for the position on Tuesday, April 26.

“After reviewing the feedback, it was clear that Melissa was the best fit for the job,” East Mills Superintendent Tim Hood said, “Melissa clearly conveyed her passion and readiness for the job during the interviews. The feedback was clear that she is the best candidate for the staff and students at East Mills Elementary.  Her knowledge about the district will ensure a smooth transition and continue the positive course the building is on.”

Nielsen will begin transitioning into the role with Kelly Sutherland between now and officially starting her contract on July 1.
