Early, Absentee Voting Begins Oct. 16 In Iowa

Early / absentee voting for the Nov. 5 general election begins Wednesday, Oct. 16, in Mills County and across the state of Iowa.
For voters wanting to cast their early / absentee ballot in person, they can do so at the Mills County Auditor’s Office on the main floor of the Mills County Courthouse during normal office hours (8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.) from Oct. 16 through Monday, Nov. 4.
The auditor’s office will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the following days leading up to the election: Monday, Oct. 21, Friday, Nov. 1, Saturday, Nov. 2 and Friday, Nov. 15.
A ballot may be mailed to a voter upon request. Requests can be made in writing (voters must include their name, ID #, address, date of birth, name and date of the election, voter signature, and signature date) or on an official Absentee Ballot Request form.
Official forms may be obtained by contacting the Auitor’s office or on the county’s website at www.millscountyiowa.gov.
Absentee Ballot requests must be received by the auditor’s office no later than 5 p.m. on on Monday, October 21, 2024. Absentee ballots must be received at the auditor’s office no later than 8 p.m. on Tuesday, November 5, 2024. Absentee ballots cannot be placed in the drop box outside the Courthouse. Voters may check the status of their absentee ballot by contacting the Mills County Auditor’s Office.
Several federal, county and state offices are up for election in this year’s general election.
On the federal portion of the ballot, in addition to president and vice president, the U.S. House Of Representatives District 4 race between Democrat Ryan Melton and Republican incumbent Randy Feenstra is on the ballot.
Two legislative races are on the ballot in Mills County. For State Senator District 8, incumbent Republican Mark Costello is opposed by Democratic challenger Ryan Roenfeld. For State Representative District 16, Democrat Candella Foley-Finchem is challenging Republican incumbent David Sieck.
The only contested race for a county courthouse office is for two seats up for election on the Mills County Board Supervisors. Five candidates for vying for the two seats – Democrat Bruce Wray, Republicans Lonnie Mayberry (incumbent) and Jack Sayers,
Libertarian Jessica Brooks and Henry Clark, who is running as a no-party candidate. Profiles of the five candidates and a “Q&A” are published today in The Opinion-Tribune on pages 4A and 5A.
Amber Farnan is running unopposed as the Republican candidate for Mills County Auditor, Republican Greg Schultz is unopposed for Mills County Sheriff and incumbent Republican County Attorney DeShawne Bird-Sell is also unopposed.
Candidates for township trustees, Mills County Soil and Water Conservation District Commissioner and Agricultural Extension Council are also on the ballot along with some judicial positions at the district and state levels.
