Malcom wins title at C.B. Wrestling Classic
COUNCIL BLUFFS - Matt Malcom capped a perfect weekend with an individual title at the second annual Council Bluffs Wrestling Classic at the Mid America Center in Council Bluffs Saturday.
Malcom, a junior, pinned Atlantic’s Reid Nichols in 1:31 to win the 152-pound weight class. Malcom entered the day ranked No. 4 at 152-pounds in Class 3A and remains undefeated on the season.
“This was a statement tournament for him,” said Glenwood coach Brad Asche of Malcom. “I think he wanted to make a statement he’s one of the top wrestlers in the state in his weight class and this was a breakout for him. He really wrestled well.”
Glenwood placed second among southwest Iowa teams and ninth overall at the tournament that featured 32 teams from five states and over 400 wrestlers. Council Bluffs Lewis Central was seventh overall. Olathe (Kan.) North was the team champion.
The Rams’ Zach Haggstrom added a fourth place finish at 195 pounds.
“Getting top four, that’s a breakout for him at a top tournament,” Asche said. “It’s not an easy task in that class.”
Anthony Sherry battled in a stacked 160 pound weight class to place sixth.
“Some of those weights are really tough and Anthony knew he was going to have a tough road to get to the top and he had a couple of close matches that could have gone either way but he wrestled really well in a tough weight class,” Asche said.
Isaac Bales added an eigth place showing at 170 pounds for the Rams.
Entering the tournament, Asche said the Rams had two goals: five top eight finish es ers and a top 10 team finish. Glenwood finished with four top individual place winners and a ninth place team showing. Two other Ram wrestlers – 220-pounder Caleb Sanders and 145-pounder Andrew Tilley – both placed ninth.
“The whole team wrestled well,” Asche said. “We fell a little bit short of our goal but we could have had a couple more guys in there in the top eight. But overall, we wrestled really well.”
