Kuemper downs Glenwood, 58-52

Cole Neary and Sam Brincks combined for 23 points for Kuemper Catholic in a 58-52 victory over the Glenwood boys basketball team on Friday.

The Rams (3-4 overall 1-4 in the Hawkeye 10 Conference) were tied at 24 with the Knights at halftime but were outscored 34-28 over the final two quarters.
Grant May scored a game-high 20 points for Glenwood. Derek Jones and J.J. Hahn added eight points each.

Glenwood 48,
Red Oak 40
A season-low 29 percent shooting couldn’t prevent the Glenwood boys from recording its first Hawkeye 10 Conference victory on Thursday.
The Rams (3-4 overall, 1-3 in the conference) got 14 points from Grant Stivers and held Red Oak to a single field goal over the final two minutes in a 48-40 victory.
“I thought our pressure was good. We had a few let downs here and there but for the most part, our pressure was good,” Schulte said. “Our offense created defense for us at times.”
Alternating between their “diamond” (1-2-1-1 zone) and a 2-2-1 presses, the Rams forced six turnovers in a four minute span to open the second quarter on a 12-0 run. Glenwood would hold the Tigers without a point for over six minutes in the frame to turn a 9-8 Tiger lead into a 20-8 Ram lead.
“We were able to balloon the lead up a little bit, they struggled with the diamond a little bit,” Schulte said. “Pressure is usually good for us. We have some pretty good athletes and we need to keep doing that.”
Glenwood led 20-15 at the break, but the Rams would again use its defense to create offense. Stivers’ two free throws extended the Ram lead to 32-19 with 5:17 to go in the third quarter. Tyler Jensen’s runner and a Stivers three-pointer – both coming off Ram steals – put Glenwood out for good at 39-23 with 2:09 to go in the frame.
The Rams led by as many as 17 in the fourth before the Tigers attempted a rally, thanks to shakey Glenwood free throw shooting over the final three minutes. Leading 47-36, Glenwood missed four of five free throws over the final 2:32 to allow the Tigers to trim the lead to 48-40. But that’s as close at they would get.
“They’re a good team. They kept plugging away. My hats tipped to them. They kept figting to the end,” Schulte said.
Glenwood finished 12-of-24 at the line and 14-of-47 from the field (29.8 percent).
“We have to convert better. We just talked about that in the locker room. We’re getting good looks, we just have to convert better. We’re missing a lot of easy ones and we have to convert better on the perimeter,” Schulte said.
Stivers’ 14 points was a career-high. The senior also added six rebounds and six steals.
“He played a good game” Schulte said. “It’s good to see him shooting the ball well. He’s shot well the last two games and we definitely need him from the perimiter,” Schulte said.
Derek Jones chipped in eight for Glenwood and Tyler Jensen and Grant May added seven each.
