Head-on Collision Injures 2, Shuts Down Highway 34

Two people were injured in a head-on collision late Thursday morning on U.S. Highway 34 in central Mills County.

Iowa State Patrol investigators said a 2017 Ford pickup truck driven by 62-year-old Allan J. Garrow of Broughton, Ill., was driving eastbound on Highway 34 and pulling a horse trailer, about three miles east of Malvern, shortly after 11 a.m., when his vehicle crossed the centerline for unknown reasons, striking a westbound semi-trailer truck loaded with soybeans driven by 29-year-old Michael William Stamp of Neola.

Garrow's vehicle veered off the south side of the roadway and ended up in a ditch. Stamp's semi overturned onto its side, spilling soybeans and blocking both the eastbound and westbound lanes of the highway.

Garrow was transported to the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha by medical Helicopter with critical injuries. Stamp was taken by private vehicle to Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs with non life-threatening injuries.

The state patrol was assisted at the scene by the Mills County Sheriff's Office, Malvern Fire and Rescue, Hastings Fire and Rescue and Glenwood Fire and Rescue.

The highway was closed for several hours Thursday to allow for clean-up of the accident scene.

The state patrol is continuing its investigation of the accident.
