GMU taking on major water main projects in 2017
Glenwood Municipal Utilities (GMU) has begun an extensive water main replacement project on Coolidge Street, between Hazel and Grove.
The two-block long project involves the replacement of a water main that was installed nearly 80 years ago.
Dave Malcom, assistant supervisor for the water department, said the 2-inch cast iron line is being replaced with 6-inch ductile iron pipe. The project includes the installation of 15 connector lines to the shut-off valves on individual properties. Shut-off valves will be replaced if necessary.
Malcom said multiple leaks have occurred on the Coolidge Street line recently.
“It’s failed on us a few times the last couple years,” Malcom said.
Private contractors are carrying out the work, which is expected to completed next week. Similar projects are planned for Chestnut St. (between Fourth and Sixth) and Sixth St. (between Chestnut and Vine) after the Coolidge St. project has been completed.
