Glenwood trio earns valuable experience at state tennis meet
IOWA CITY - Glenwood’s Ellie Osterloh, Brooklyn Taylor and Erin Stanley competed in last weekend’s Iowa State Girls Singles and Doubles Tennis Tournament at the Hawkeye Tennis Recreation Complex in Iowa City.
Osterloh, the Rams’ singles qualifier, and the doubles pair of Taylor and Stanley both dropped their two matches at state.
“I knew going in the competition would be tough,” said Glenwood coach Callie Ohm. “The girls played their best but fell in straight games.”
Osterloh faced off against Bry Ronca of Ballard in the first round of the state tournament. Ronca defeated Osterloh in straight sets 6-2,6-4. In the consolation bracket, Osterloh played her second match against Clear Lake’s Gretchen Jones of Clear Lake. Jones defeated Osterloh in three sets 6-7, 6-4 and 10-5 by super tie-breaker.
“She played well and had many great winning shots,” Ohm said of Osterloh. “I was impressed with her play and can’t wait to see what she will be able to do next year.”
In doubles, Taylor and Stanley went up against Pella’s Bronwyn Metcalf and Cecily Johnson in the first round of tournament play. The Little Dutch duo downed Taylor and Stanley 6-2, 6-0. Taylor and Stanley played their second match against Carolyn Conlon and Anna Freiburger of Dubuque-Wahlert in the consolation bracket. The team of Conlon and Freiburger won in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 to end Taylor and Stanley’s state tournament.
“For not playing together a whole bunch before the state tournament, these two did great,” Ohm said of Taylor and Stanley. “I think that if I pair these two up next year they will be hard to beat.”
Osterloh, Taylor and Stanley all return for the Rams’ next year, along with a deep and talented roster who gained valuable experience this season.
“The whole team has a ton of potential and I look forward to next season,” Ohm said. “Being the first team to reach the state tournament is a huge accomplishment. These three girls should also be proud of themselves being sophomores and a junior making it to the state tournament.”
