Glenwood sixth at Ed Winger Classic

Facing off against 21 of the top wrestling teams in the state, the Glenwood wrestling team had two individual champions and placed sixth as a team at the Ed Winger Classic in Urbandale Saturday.

Class 3A top ranked Southeast Polk ran away with the team title, racking up 246.5 points to runner up West Des Moines Valley’s 191.5. But just 17 points separated sixth place Glenwood (110.5) and third place Indianola (127.5).

“This tournament is loaded every year,” said Glenwood coach Brad Asche. “We worked really hard to get into it the last few years. It’s not a tournament you just fall into. We wrestled well and had five guys place in the top four. We had some missed opportunities but this was a good chance for us to see where we’re at and what we can do. I think our guys are feeling pretty good.”

The Rams crowned two individual champions at the tournament with heavyweight Caleb Sanders and 182-pounder Anthony Sherry winning their finals matches.

The Class 3A, No. 2 ranked Sanders defeated Nathan McDonald 9-5 in the championship bout.

“He had a tough day against a lot of highly ranked kids,” Asche said of Sanders. “His side of the bracket just to get to the finals was tough. He did a good job getting on his offense, which we’ve been preaching.”
Sherry, the No. 2 ranked 182-pounder in Class 3A, knocked off previously unbeaten Spencer Sherwood of Burlington with a 17-8 major decision.

“Anthony wrestled really well all day,” Asche said. “He put up a lot of points for us, which we talked about with his widening the gap between himself and the guys in his class. Sherwood was ranked right behind him and put up a lot of points and mentally broke him. That was good to see.”

Also placing for Glenwood was Zach Haggstrom (third, 220 pounds), Trevor Anderson (fourth, 145) and Isaac Bales (fourth, 195).

“Top four at this tournament is a pretty big deal,” Asche said. “We went from having in two in the top four last year to five this year. I think that’s a pretty good stepping stone for us.”

Haggstrom pinned Des Moines’ Roosevelt’s Andrew Woock to earn his third palace medal at 220.

“The top three ranked kids were all at the tournament and he was the odd man out so he had to get through one of them. He closed the gap big time against a kid from West Des Moines Valley (Rocky Lombardi) who pinned him earlier this year. He got him (Haggstrom) 5-1 but he gained a lot of momentum.”

The Rams will head to Kuemper Catholic Saturday for the Hawkeye 10 Conference Wrestling Meet.

Rams split H-10 duals

The Glenwood wrestling team split a pair of Hawkeye 10 Conference duals on Senior Night in Glenwood.

The Class 3A, No. 6 ranked Rams fell to Class 2A, No. 4 Atlantic 42-30 in the opener. Glenwood bounced back to down Clarinda 58-22 in the nightcap.

“We wrestled good,” said Glenwood coach Brad Asche. “It was a good atmosphere, just wish we could’ve gotten the win over Atlantic for those seniors. We matched up well, but lost a few close matches and gave up bonus points and you can’t do that and win duals as a team.

“I’m looking forward to the next few weeks, we’re continuing to get better,” Asche said.
