Glenwood school board approves $9k in incentive pay
The Glenwood Board of Directors unanimously approved $9,000 in administrator incentive pay to nine district administrators at last Monday’s regular monthly board meeting at the central office.
The bonuses consist of $1,000 payments to the entirety of the district’s administrator staff and also Superintendent Devin Embray. The bonus money is drawn from a state fund and represents a half payment, the first of which was paid last December, for administrators who earned the bonus.
The administrators receiving the bonuses are Northeast Principal Sherry Herron, West Principal Genie Wickham, Glenwood Middle School Principal Heidi Stanley, Glenwood High School Principal Richard Hutchinson, Assistant Principal Rick Nickerson and Activities Director Jeff Bissen. Director of Student Services and Special Education Jackie Wills, Director of Student Improvement Sandi Burke also will receive the bonus.
The incentive is awarded based on each administrator’s career development plan according to their leadership and learning goals outlined each with the district and coordinated by Embray. Each administrator and Embray meet quarterly throughout the school year to evaluate the development plan progress to determine if the administrator will receive their incentive bonus. If administrators do not meet the incentive criteria, they can be withheld.
“I meet with them quarterly to check progress on their plan,” Embray said “Each (administrator) has three leadership and three learning goals a year that go above and beyond what is in their job descriptions. If they are working towards the goal, they get the December payment. If the progress is there in May, they get the other payment.”
In the last seven years, Embray has declined to award a bonus four times.
Embray’s career development plan progress and evaluation is handled by the school board.

Meal prices at the elementary school, middle school and high school in the Glenwood Community School District will be going up for the 2017-2018 school year. The board approved a five-cent hike across the board for lunch and breakfast. Elementary lunch costs go from $2.65 to $2.70 and at the middle school and high school it will go up from $2.75 to $2.80. Student breakfast at all three buildings will go up from $1.75 to $1.80. Adults breakfast costs will increase 10 cents to $2.10 and adult lunch will increase to $3.55. Superintendent Devin Embray said the cost of meals going up is largely attributed to federal requirement the district be over a “certain price point” for free and reduced lunch status.
