Glenwood Girls Crack Rankings, Pick Up 2 Wins
Elle Scarborough led three players in double-figures and the Glenwood girls basketball team matched their win total of a year ago with a 69-37 victory over Atlantic last Tuesday night, Jan. 8
The Rams, who improved to 8-3 overall and 5-1 in the conference win, equaled their number of wins from last year’s 8-15 season.
“We progressively keep getting better and playing with confidence each time we step on the floor,” Glenwood coach Brian Rasmussen said. “We’re still trying to figure things out though, and that’s a good thing. I’m not taking anything away from what we’ve accomplished, it’s all great, but based on where we’re at and our potential, we have a ways to go. Which is exciting. I told the girls that’s not a negative. Our ceiling is a ways away.”
Glenwood began each half quickly, sprinting out to an 18-8 lead after a quarter and extending their lead to more than 20 with a big third quarter run.
For the game, the Rams shot 50 percent from the field (30-of-60), held a 29 to 25 rebounding advantage and had five players score eight or more points in winning their fourth straight game by double-figures.
“We work a ton on passing and shooting the basketball and we have a lot of depth and a lot of kids that can contribute on the offensive end,” he said. “Trying to get to the basket (against Atlantic) was a little difficult, they had a good plan defensively. We just hit some shots and made it tough for them. We did a good job moving the ball around.”
Scarborough shot 7-of-12 for her game-high 16 points. Madison Camden added 11 and Brielle Smith 10. Coryl Matheny, in her first varsity action of the season, chipped in nine points and Abby Hughes had eight.
McKenzie Waters led Atlantic with 11 points.
Glenwood 69,
St. Albert 61
Three Glenwood players scored in double figures as the Rams held off pesky St. Albert, 69-61, Friday night at the Jennie Ed Sports Med MAC Shootout at the Mid-America Center.
Glenwood took a 40-35 lead into the locker room at halftime and then held off the Saintes in the fourth quarter to pull away for the victory. The Rams improved to 9-3 on the season with the win.
Scarborough paced the Glenwood offensive attack in the first half, scoring 19 points while knocking down four three-point field goals.
Camden got the hot hand in the second half, scoring 13 points. She tallied a game-high 22 points. Scarborough finished the night with 21 points, while Smith chipped in 10 points and pulled down a team-leading nine rebounds.
“We have a lot of options (offensively),” Rasmussen said. “I think that’s going to make us a tough team to defend against down the road.”
Scarborough and Brynlee Arnold both collected seven rebounds for the Rams, who cracked the Class 4A state rankings last week at No. 14.
“We talked about it (ranking) after the game,” Rasmussen said. “We told the girls you’ve got a target on your back now and they’re going to try to knock you down.”
Teagan Blackburn and Bailey White both scored a team-high 12 points for the Saintes, who fell to 5-8 with the loss.
The Rams were scheduled to play at Harlan on Saturday, but the game was postponed because of the weekend snowstorm. The contest has been rescheduled for Jan. 26.
