Glenwood girls, boys sweep Co-ed Ram Relays

The Glenwood girls and boys track teams ran away from the competition and swept the team titles at their own Co-ed Ram Relays last Monday.

The Glenwood girls racked up 156 teams points to best Shenandoah’s 133 points. In all, the Glenwood girls won six gold medals and placed in the top three in eight other events.

“We had several seasonal best and personal bests set at the Co-ed Relays,” said Glenwood coach Brad Rasmussen. “The girls competed well for the most part, though I do not think we were as sharp as we have been this year. Winning meets is always the goal, but we also need to be mentally and physically ready to handle challenges through out the season. We need to be ready to step up and compete in events, which may not be our favorite.”

Winning gold for Glenwood was Linnaea Konfrst (discus), Jacy Embray (shot put), Courtney Magnussen (100-meter dash), Miranda Ruth (100-meter hurdles) and the shuttle hurdle and 4x400-meter relays.

The Glenwood boys out-paced runner up Harlan, 136.5 to 110 in the team standings behind seven gold medals, including top relay finishes in the shuttle hurdle, 4x100-meters and 4x400-meters.

“We still have one more home meet to go but we haven’t lost a home meet since 2008,” said Glenwood boys coach Mark Starner.  “We take a lot of pride in winning at home. Not all community members get a chance to see us compete out of town; so we want to strive to put our best line-up  together to win the team title.”

Earning individual gold medals for the boys were Mavrick Decker (100-meter dash), James Fuller (200 and 400 and Dane Kruse (110-meter hurdles).

The Rams’ 4x800-meter (fifth place), shuttle hurdle relay and 4x400-meter all set season-best times.

Rams win at Red Oak

The Glenwood boys track team went on the road and captured the team title at the Red Oak Tiger Relays Friday.

“We ran alright as a whole and had some good times posted, but as a team it felt that we were a little off kilter throughout the meet,” said Glenwood coach Mark Starner. “Not sure if it was because of the day off of school or the day before prom, but it didn’t seem as if we really got into the swing of things.  Coming off of Monday’s outstanding performances at our home meet, it definitely didn’t feel the same.”

The Rams were once again strong in the sprints and hurdles as James Fuller took home gold in the 100-meters with a blistering meet record time of 10.80. Mavrick Decker added a gold in the 200-meters and Blaine Clark won the 110-meter hurdles. Glenwood also added a gold in the shuttle hurdle relay in a meet record time of 59.46.

Dru Little added a second place showing in the discus and a fourth in the shot.
The Rams’ 4x100, 4x200, 4x400-meter relays all placed second.

“We have to continue to get better down the stretch a find some individuals to step it up to help us out in some events for conference and districts,” Starner said.

The Glenwood girls and boys track teams are back in action Thursday when the Rams host the Hawkeye 10 Conference Track and Field Meet. Field events begin at 4:30 p.m.
