Glenwood is eighth at Red Owens Holiday Classic

Brett Mower took home top honors in his weight class and Glenwood was eighth at the Red Owens Holiday Classic Saturday at Southeast Polk High School.

The hosts were the runaway team champions with 367 points. Bettendorf was a distant runner up with 246 points. Glenwood was second among Hawkeye 10 Conference teams with 106 points. Atlantic was fourth with 149.5.

Glenwood had three place winners on the day, including Mower’s gold medal at 182-pounds.

Glenwood coach Brad Asche said he thought his team wrestled “alright” against an admittedly stacked field in Southeast Polk.

“We are learning each and every time out,” Asche said. “Brett wrestled well in a weight class that had three ranked guys. He won pretty handily. He is getting his offense going, but needs to keep working on some things. The other kids are learning every time they wrestle, we just have to stop making the same mistakes.”

Class 3A, No. 6 rated Mower went 3-0 on the day to win the 182-pound division. He earned a 6-4 decision over Iowa City West’s Will Hoeft in the championship match.

Also placing for Glenwood was heavyweight Hunter Haggstrom, who placed fifth, and 132-pounder Ryker Case who was fourth. Haggstrom pinned Prairie City-Monroe’s Jace Smith in the first period in his fifth place match and Case fell in the third place match to  Prairie City-Monroe’s Payton Drake by major decision, 11-2.

Rams 1-2 in home quad

The Glenwood wrestling team went 1-2 in a home quadrangular last Tuesday.

The Rams defeated Treynor 58-22 and dropped decisions to Creston 43-28 and Underwood 46-36.

Dalton Bell (106-pounds), Brett Mower (182) and Logan Fornoff (220) all won their three matches on the night and Nick Gill (170), Juan Sherry (152), Mitch Mayberry (160), Cole Mayberry (195) and Noah Clark (285) won two matches.
