Glenwood boys soccer 2-1 at Waverly-Shell Rock tournament
The Glenwood boys soccer team dropped its opener and bounced back to win its next two matches at the Waverly-Shell Rock Invitational on Saturday.
The Rams (10-3 overall, 5-0 in the Hawkeye 10 Conference) opened the tournament flat against Clear Lake and never seemed to get on track in a 1-0 loss. Glenwood followed the opening round loss with a 2-1 win over Columbus Catholic and a 2-0 victory over Fort Dodge.
“They had won nine in a row coming in and I don’t think we dealt with the adversity of the North game (Tuesday),” said Glenwood coach Shane Keeling. “But it is what it is. We had some chances and they had a couple of good finishers.”
Clear Lake got a header from Antonio DiMarco for the game-winner.
Unhappy with his team’s play in the opener, Keeling juggled his line up in game two, plugging several junior varsity regulars into the starting line up.
“We as coaches were especially frustrated with how the first game went,” Keeling said. “We basically wanted to send a message to some of our starters to wake up.”
The Rams played game two with a predominantly J.V. line up and Keeling liked what he saw.
“The guys that don’t get a lot of time really stepped up and played well,” Keeling said. “I think those guys sitting out were really happy for those guys and what they were able to do.”
Andy Staiert scored his first goal and Logan McCorkle his second of their season in the win.
Keeling’s team received the message for game three. Glenwood pummeled Class 3A Fort Dodge with 25 shots on goal in a 2-0 victory.
“I think it woke them up and fired them up,” Keeling said. “We just dominated them. The score was 2-0 but it could have been a lot worse. I think they had two shots on goal.”
Payton Kalambokidis scored his team-leading 11th goal of the season in the Fort Dodge win. Sophomore Fernando Gonzalez scored his first career varsity goal.
Glenwood 1,
Sioux City North 0 (4-2)
After 80 minutes of regulation and 20 minutes of overtime play, Glenwood out-scored Sioux City North 4-2 in a shootout to record a 1-0 victory in a non-conference boys soccer match last Tuesday.
“This game, skill-wise was a very, very good game both ways,” said Glenwood coach Shane Keeling. “North certainly had their chances to score and we had our chances in regulation to score. Both teams just struggled to find the back of the net.”
In overtime, Keeling felt his team seized the momentum and had several good quality attacks that just came up short. Heading into the shootout phase, Keeling thought he had a good idea who would take his team’s shots.
Keeling originally intended to have his sweeper Andy Staiert take the Rams’ first shot but the sophomore was cramping up so the coach juggled his lineup. The change worked. Daniel Leu stepped up to score the first goal and was following by Scout Crow, Ryan Phillips and Ross Van Slyke, who all scored.
The Stars could manage just two goals off Ram goalkeeper Connor Weis who finished with a season-high 23 saves.
Keeling was surprised his team had the last kick following North winning the coin toss.
“Their coach elected to go first. I’ve never as a coach chosen to do that. I just think it’s always better to be last when you take your shots after seeing what your opponents do,” Keeling said. “It was a good win. Wish it had been less dramatic but it's always nice to get the win.”
Glenwood girls 3,
Sioux City West 0
The Glenwood girls snapped a four-game losing skid with a 3-0 victory over Sioux City West Thursday.
“It was nice to get another win,” said Glenwood coach Amy Benson. “The game was extremely windy and I was proud of how the girls were able to adapt to it to finish the game with a win.”
Jordyn Hanshaw kicked off the Ram scoring with a goal in 21st minute off an Ana Frazee assist.
Sarah Homan added a second goal and Sydney Stiver was credited with an assist on an own-goal by the Wolverines goalie Abby Kirkpatrick in the second half.
Rileigh Spahn had five saves in goal for Glenwood.
