Glenwood blanks Heelan on road
Last week it was the offense’s turn.
This week, it was the defense.
A week after racking up 644 yards and 44 points in a season-opening shootout victory, Glenwood’s defense shut out Sioux City Bishop Heelan while limiting the Crusaders to 154 total yards in a 17-0 victory on the road Friday in Sioux City.
“We played a pretty complete game defensively,” said Glenwood coach Cory Faust. “Our coverage was solid and the guys up front did a nice job as well.”
The Ram defense gave up 272 yards passing and four TDs to Carroll quarterback Colby Vincent a week ago. This week, they harassed Heelan quarterback Luke Longval into a 13-for-32 passing night while holding him to a net-zero yards rushing on seven carries.
“I think our secondary will continue to get better,” Faust said. “We have some guys in new positions and first year varsity players but they’re all very capable and we’ll continue to get better. The talent is there. It’s experience and reps.”
Glenwood got out to a 7-0 lead in the first quarter on Cole Mayberry’s one-yard touchdown plunge. The score would remain that way into the fourth when Mayberry again would find the end zone out of the “wildcat” when he rumbled 60 yards into the end zone for a 14-0 lead.
Kicker Brock Sell booted a 28-yard field goal late in the fourth to complete the Rams’ scoring.
Glenwood totaled 339 yards on the night. Quarterback Zach Carr completed 15-of-26 passes for 154 yards and Glenwood ground out 185 yards rushing on 44 carries.
Mayberry tallied both Ram touchdowns and finished with a career-high 104 yards rushing on 13 carries.
Brock Smith paced the defense with 7.5 tackles and Carr wrapped up two solo stops and interception.
Glenwood heads back on the Friday to face Kuemper Catholic. Kick-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
