Glenwood 2-3 at competitive Heelan duals
The Glenwood wrestling team went 2-3 at the Sioux City Heelan Invitational Wrestling Duals on Saturday.
The Rams dropped their opener to Sioux City East 56-18 before coming back in the second dual to beat LeMars 61-15. Glenwood then lost their next two duals (38-31 to Logan-Magnolia and Lincoln (Neb.) East 41-33 before dispatching Sioux City West 51-15 in the final dual.
“We didn’t start off the day wrestling very well against (Sioux City) East and it was an overall difficult day,” said Glenwood coach Matt Dyer. “East is a very strong dual team and we didn’t come out very well in that dual. I will take some of the blame not getting the guys ready to go and for us coming out flat. We were in a lot of the other duals.”
Against Logan-Magnolia, currently ranked No. 2 in the state, Dyer thought his team had a shot at the win before the Panthers pulled away.
Glenwood 285-pounder Colin White won all five of his dual matches, two by pin and three by forfeit. Nate Harms (125 pounds) and Tyler Maxwell (145) both went 4-1.
Overall Dyer was disappointed by his team's showing but he liked how they competed against good competition.
“We got to see some teams that we will see at districts so we can prepare for that,” he said. “We can’t sit and think about what we did wrong at Sioux City. We have Harlan and the Hawkeye 10 tournament this week and we need to prepare for that. We need to put the past away, work on our problem areas, and stay focused for this week. We only have a few weeks to get ready for districts.”
Glenwood downs Red Oak
The Glenwood wrestling team overcame a slow start to defeat Red Oak 61-15 in a Hawkeye 10 Conference dual last Tuesday.
“We came out a little flat against Red Oak,” said Glenwood coach Matt Dyer. “We have to be prepared for the long season and I think some of the guys were down from the long weekend. We have to keep on the winning mind set. It’s a lifestyle that our guys have to adjust to.”
Glenwood won 11 of 14 matches, including five by pin. Billy Lucy (103 pounds), Nate Harms (125), Beau Johnson (130), Trent Jameson (152) and Jon Williams (160) all recorded pins.
The Rams, 7-2 overall and 6-1 in the conference, have tough duals remaining against Harlan and Atlantic on the schedule.
“We can finish in the top two in the conference if we win these next conference meets. Harlan is the last home meet so I hope the guys are ready to go,” said Dyer.
