Getting off on the right foot
The Glenwood girls won the team title and the Rams’ Parson Covington the boys individual title at the 43rd annual Glenwood Co-ed Cross Country Meet Saturday at Glenwood Lake Park.
The Ram girls placed three runners in the top 12 – led by Aubrey McIntyre’s third place finish – to score 51 points and out-pace runner up Harlan’s 75 points.
Kate Kaufman was fifth for Glenwood with Abi Schultz (12th), Katelyn Malcom (17th) and Lacey Jackson (19th) giving the Rams’ five runners among the top 20 finishers.
The team title was the Glenwood girls first on their home course since 1986.
“I was proud of how smart Aubrey McIntyre and Kate Kaufman ran to both place in the top five,” said Glenwood girls coach Jeff Janssen. “And to have Katelyn Malcom and Erin Schultz, in their first cross country races ever, place in the top 25 was phenomenal. While she’s been a little under the weather this year, Lauren Becker has a great start to her high school career and I know that she’s just going to keep getting faster and faster as the year goes on. Lastly, I am proud of Abi Schultz and what she showcased Saturday. No one put on more miles this summer than her.”
East Mills’ Janette Schraft won a wire-to-wire individual championship with a time of 19:46.86. Harlan’s Greichaly Kaster was the runner up with a time of 20:18.87.
On the boys side, Covington’s late push allowed him to edge Atlantic’s Jalen Petersen for the individual title. Covington, a junior, finished with a time of 17:38.46.
The Rams also got a 10th place finish from Sam McIntyre and a 12th place finish from Mason Parks. Gable Thompson (16th) and Tyler Huey (18th) rounded out Glenwood’s scoring.
The Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson boys, behind fourth, fifth and sixth place finishes by Anthony Humpal, Aidan Booton and Archie Powders, won the boys meet with 35 points.
Luke Moore led the East Mills boys with a 44th place finish.
