Fremont-Mills cruises to 8-1 victory over Essex

Fremont-Mills got a gem of pitching performance from Kendall Reed and cruised to an 8-1 victory over Essex in Corner Conference softball Friday in Essex.

Reed, a senior, allowed just two hits and one earned run while fanning seven in the complete game. She also helped her own cause at the plate by driving in a run and scoring a run.

The Knights picked up just four hits offensively but they also drew four walks and stole nine bases. Elizabeth Bartles led the way with two hits.

Fremont-Mills 5,
Missouri Valley 4, 8 innings

Fremont-Mills pushed a run across in the top of the eighth inning and held on for a 5-4 victory over Missouri Valley in extra-innings softball last Wednesday.

Elizabeth Bartles, Malea Moore and Kennedy Lamkins notched two hits each to lead the Knights. Lamkins and Moore each drove in two runs.

Taylor Morgan picked up her first victory of the season with a complete-game. The junior scattered eight hits and four runs with five strikeouts.

Ashlyn Cook came on in relief of starter Julia Janssen and took the loss. The senior struck out eight and allowed one hit.

Sidney 18,
Fremont-Mills 4

Fremont-Mills spotted Sidney a seven-run lead in the top of the second inning and could never dig out in a 14-8 loss in the softball opener last Monday.

After plating seven in the second, the Cowgirls pushed five more across in fourth and led 12-1 heading in the fifth inning.

The Knights could never quite get their bats going against Sidney starting pitcher Olivia Larsen. Larsen scattered nine hits and two earned runs while fanning six.

All nine of the Knights’ hits were singles.

One bright spot for Fremont-Mills head coach Kyle Fichter in his team’s disappointing season-opening loss was their mindset. He didn’t see his team lose focus even when they got down big.

“I think our attitude was a little better than in past years where we put ourselves in that situation,” he said. “We still struggled to hit, no doubt and we had a heads down there a little bit. But we put ourselves in that spot. I think we handled it a little better than we have. So that’s a positive.”

Taylor Morgan, Elizabeth Bartles and Kennedy Lamkins had two hits each to lead F-M.

Kendall Reed was credited with the loss after allowing eight hits and eight earned runs in three innings of work.
