Stanton edged Fremont-Mills 26-28, 25-23, 17-25, 25-20, 15-12 in a competitive Corner Conference volleyball battle in Tabor last Tuesday.

The Knights (9-6 overall, 2-3 in the conference) won the opening set by tie-breaker and were close to pulling off a second set win before a Viqueen (6-10 overall, 3-0 in the conference) rally turned the match.

“I thought overall we played pretty well,” said Fremont-Mills coach Tracy Malcom. “We have to focus on the little things that can get us over the hump when its time to finish. This game was about two very comparable teams and in the end the other team received the ‘W.’  It really could have went either way, and the girls played hard and I commend them for that.”

The Knights pounded home a season-high 47 kills in the loss. Sophie Phillips led the way with 22 kills. Clara Schaaf added 12 and Bailey Hauschild six.

Rachel Wietzki paced the Knight offense with 41 set assists.

The loss to Stanton was the third this season where the Knights won the opening set. Despite the result, Malcom sees a teaching moment for her team.

“It is emotionally mentally and physically in a five set match, but we have to remain focused on each and every role each player is out there to contribute,” Malcom said. “This season we have had sort of a roller coaster of a ride, with many ups and downs. We need to find a way to play up and stay up, and keep a positive outlook.  I believe if nothing else, this lose may have benefited us more than hinder us, it shows us where we are lacking in certain areas and what we need to do to get better.”

Savanna Moffett led Stanton with 21 kills.
