Exterior Wall of Former Restaurant Building Collapses
An insurance adjuster and structural engineer are expected to be in Glenwood Tuesday to assess the damage and condition of a building southwest of Town Square that began collapsing Sunday morning.
The structure at 104 S. Walnut St. most recently housed Doodle’s Grill. Before that, it was the home to the Oasis restaurant.
Members of the Glenwood Volunteer Fire Department were on the scene Sunday morning after the structural collapse was first reported. The immediate area surrounding the building was barricaded off to the public. Bricks and other large pieces of debris from the building continued to fall late Sunday night and Monday morning.
Several businesses located in close proximity to the building were closed Monday, including The Opinion-Tribune newspaper, LPL Financial and CyaNet.
Doodles Grill, which went out of business earlier this year, was owned and operated by Joe and Wendy Kuhnert. The building is insured through Aistrope Insurance Agency of Glenwood.
Glenwood code enforcement officer Jim Webel said the city has taken precautionary measures by blocking off pedestrian and motor vehicle traffic on portions of Walnut and Sharp Street and could take additional actions after hearing from the structural engineer.
“We have been in touch with the property owners and we have to first give them the opportunity to do what they need to do,” Webel said. “They’re aware that this is a dire situation. We’ll proceed from there.”
