East Mills boys, F-M girls repeat at Corner meet
Kelsey Hurley won four gold medals and Travis Tupper three as the Fremont-Mills girls and the East Mills boys track teams repeated as Corner Conference champions in Tabor last Tuesday.
For the second straight season, Hurley won gold in the 100, 200, 400 and the high jump to pace the Knight girls with 40 of their meet-best 151 team points. Sidney was a distant runner-up with 116 points. Hurley personally out-scored all five teams at the conference meet.
The East Mills boys repeated as conference champions with 165 team points to the Fremont-Mills boys’ 127 points.
Fremont-Mills’ girls earned six gold medals in all with Taryn Williams snagging gold in the long jump at the Knights’ sprint medley relay team finishing with a top time of 2:01.71.
The Knights got second place finishes from Macy Williams (800-meter run), Taryn Williams (100-meter hurdles), Kalyn Madison (400-meter hurdles) and from their shuttle hurdle, distance medley and 4x400-meter relay teams.
The Knight girls shuttle hurdle relay team came close to getting the final say in a season-long rivalry with Stanton but Carmen Subbert edged the Knights’ Andrea McClary in the final leg for a narrow 1:09.46 to 1:09.62 victory. The Viqueens’ 1:09.46 time was a conference record.
The East Mills girls placed sixth at the conference meet with 39 team points.
The Wolverine boys got off to a hot start with Sam Rew winning the high jump and Michael Story winning the long jump. After the four field events, East Mills had already racked up 35 points.
“We ran a really solid meet Friday (May 2) and I thought if we could run that well again on Tuesday (at the conference meet) that it was our title to lose,” said East Mills coach Claude Lang.
The Wolverines 4x200-meter relay team was second with a time of 1:59.56. East Mills’ 4x100, shuttle hurdle and sprint medley relays all placed third. Jess Doyle won the top individual medal for the Wolverines with a fourth place showing in the high jump.
Tupper won the 200 and the 400-meters and anchored the Wolverine boys to a top finish in the 4x100-meter relay. Tupper came close to winning a fourth gold medal in the 100-meters but came up .03 short to Sidney’s Chris Osborne.
East Mills added individual gold medals from Sam Rew in the high jump and Michael Story in the long jump. The Wolverines’ 4x100 and shuttle hurdle relay teams also took home top finishes.
“Our depth is why we are able to win track meets,” Lang said. “We work hard on our hand-offs to make sure whoever we put into any sprint relay is comfortable. So the depth of being able to take four guys from about 9-10 guys and still be successful pays dividends.”
The Knights placed second at the conference meet, getting gold medals from Spencer Phillips in the shot put, Parker Powers in the 110-meter hurdles, Mackenzy Lang in the 3,200-meters and from its distance medley relay team.
The Knights had a one-two finish in the 3,200-meters with Lang snagging the top time thanks to a strong 100-meter kick to overtake teammate Jason Rusten at the finish line.
Powers added a second place finish in the high jump and a third in the long jump.

Wolverines edge Treynor at Underwood Coed meet
The East Mills boys track team won the final event of the night to edged Treynor 140 to 138 in the team standings at the Underwood Coed Track Meet Friday.
East Mills won the 4x100-meter relay to tie the score with Treynor with one race remaining: the 4x400-meter relay.
“Overall we didn’t have a great day, but we competed well enough to find ourselves with a chance to win,” said East Mills coach Claude Lang. “So all we had to do was beat Treynor in the final race, and the meet was ours. “
Lang’s anchor in the 4x100, Travis Tupper, looked exhausted following his gold medal anchor leg and the coach was concerned his star sprinter could be a late scratch from the 4x400.
That feeling didn’t last long, the coach said.
“I look at Travis and he waved at me like, ‘I got this coach,’” Lang said. “He started solid, and it was never close, and we won the meet. It is just one of those moments, where you are thinking about changing and putting someone else in, and he just shows his character and willingness to do whatever it takes.”
The Wolverines went on to win the 4x400 and with it, the meet.
Joey Kammering broke the East Mills record running a 2:12.09 in the open 800-meters while Sam Rew upped his school record to 6-01 in the high jump.
In all, East Mills won five gold medals at Underwood.
