Creston downs Glenwood, 61-54

Colby Taylor and Luke Neitzel combined for 35 points for Creston in a 61-54 victory over Glenwood in boys Hawkeye 10 Conference basketball on Friday.

“Neitzel is big for them but it was Taylor that hurt us the most from the perimeter,” said Glenwood coach Curt Schulte. “He hit some big shots for them, a couple of big three’s down the stretch.”
In a nip-tuck game that saw neither team lead by more than six for the most part of four quarters, the Rams (2-3 overall, 0-2 in the Hawkeye 10 Conference) couldn’t seem to cut into the Panthers’ lead.
“They hit their free throws and that was it really. I thought our free throw shooting really hurt us in a close game,” Schulte said. “We missed the front end of some one-and-ones and we didn’t take real good care of the ball at times.”
The Rams shot just 11-of-22 from the line for the game and also committed 14 turnovers. The Rams held a 31-28 rebound edge.
“We played with great effort against what I think is a very good team,” Schulte said. “This was probably the best game we’ve played this year.”
Tyler Jensen led Glenwood with a career-high 15 points. Grant Stivers and Derek Jones added 12 each and J.J. Hahn chipped in with 10.
Creston’s Taylor, a 6-foot-4 junior, added nine rebounds to go with his game-high 20 points.

Glenwood 41
The Glenwood boys basketball team struggled to find its shooting touch on the road in a 47-41 loss at Nebraska City Lourdes Central Catholic last Tuesday.
The Rams shot a season-low 30.6 percent (15-of-49) from the field in the non-conference loss.
“It was a difficult gym to play in,” said Glenwood coach Curt Schulte of the Knights’ home court. “It was a smaller gym and a tough environment for us and we didn’t adjust to it as well as I hoped. It affected our shooting and we didn’t play well down the stretch.”
Schulte said his team struggled to mount much of an offense and it showed in the box score. No Rams scored in double-figures. Trenton McNeel scored a team-high nine points. Grant Stivers chipped in with seven and Derek Jones six.
Trailing for much of the game, Glenwood cut the Knights’ lead to two points with :40 to go in the game but could come no closer as Lourdes hit its free throws down the stretch.
“We couldn’t get things rolling and we didn’t handle their pressure,” Schulte said.
