Cowgirls hold off Knights in Corner Conference semifinals

Sidney opened the game on a 23-7 first quarter run and withstood a Fremont-Mills rally to pull out a 64-54 victory in the Corner Conference girls basketball semifinals in Sidney last Wednesday.

“We got off to a very slow start, which definitely put us in a tough position,” said Fremont-Mills coach Bret Weldon. “I was very proud of the way our team continued to compete.”

The Knights, trailing 23-7 after the opening quarter on the road against the top seeded Cowgirls, would not fold and kept fighting.

Twice F-M trailed by 18 in the game and twice trimmed the Class 1A, No. 11 ranked Cowgirls (13-1, 9-0) lead to single digits in the second half but could get no closer.

“We refused to stop competing, which is a testament to the mindset of our team,” Weldon said. “Our goal was to compete and make them play a full game, where they had to battle. To the credit of their team, they continued to play tough and made big shots that kept us out of reach. Really proud of the way we competed for four quarters."

With the win Sidney advanced to the Corner Conference finals Friday where they defeated Stanton 47-36 to win their second straight conference crown.

Lexie Howard led the Knights with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Ashley Moreno added 10 points.

Maryn Phillips led four Cowgirls in double figures with 17 points. Maddy Duncan added 16, Mackenzie Hulsing 12 and Camryn McClintock 10.
